Critics Consensus

The Killing of a Sacred Deer continues director Yorgos Lanthimos' stubbornly idiosyncratic streak -- and demonstrates again that his is a talent not to be ignored.

Will F This is the greatest movie I have ever seen that I recommend to nobody. If you’re the right level of disturbed this is an absolute masterpiece, a treasure, and an instant classic. If you’re a normal mentally healthy individual you will find this confusing at best and frustrating at worst. This was my introduction to Lanthimos and since this I have gone on to watch everything else he’s made, including his short films. The man is preposterously intelligent, brutally funny, and only makes movies that are an absolute TRIP. Maybe this rollercoaster will break some riders’ teeth, but if you learn how to just accept what you’re seeing at face value and stop asking “why” about everything, it might just change your life. And I have said that about maybe 1 or 2 other movies in my life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/06/24 Full Review Harsh C All kinds of stupid. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/05/24 Full Review Jacob P Background: I created an account to post this. I watched this movie last night. I am a big fan of A24 distributed movies and enjoyed The Lobster quite a bit. Review: I haven't had such a negative reaction to a movie in a long time. Choosing to have dry emotionless dialogue is a choice and it works in some movies. But it did not work for me at all in this flick. If you strip away the style and get to the core plot of a man choosing between people he loves, and impossible choice, this movie should be fascinating and tense. The style didn't allow for any of that. There are a few scenes where it is at least mildly funny, such as the kids crawling around or pitching their reasons to not be chosen. But those are so few and far between. The antagonist of the movie was awful and I'm not usually a stickler for reasons being explained but the idea that this kid has some kind of magical powers to cause things to happen did not work for me AT ALL. Some of the bizarre world building stuff that I usually love just added to the stupidity and bafflingly bad story. I'm kind of blown away this has such positive reception. Art is subjective and there arent wrong opinions, except this one time, everyone who gave this a positive review is wrong and I pray for mercy on your souls. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review Chris W SLOWWWWWWWWWWW! They could have chopped the first 45 minutes out and had zero effect on the movie. This movie is dull at best, poor acting which is insane considering the cast. I am not sure how this director is “blowing people away “ but this is terrible. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/22/24 Full Review julie b Did I choose this for movie night with my parents? Yes. Do I regret it? Mayhaps… First of all, Barry’s performance is straight up incredible, and I loved the layers to Steven’s character (and his infinite hubris). This was so deadpan, dark, funny, and thematically rich; the awkward dialogue was particularly hilarious while also contributing to the uneasy atmosphere. The first half builds great suspense, and the second descends into such absurdity that had us laughing out loud, especially as Steven approached his “choice”. I also loved the cold cinematography that made you feel like a secret observer, and the ominous, dissonant score; you can clearly see how elements of this look and feel were leveraged for later films like Poor Things. “There, I said it as quickly as I could” “Let’s wear brown socks. Let’s make mashed potatoes. Let’s go to the beach house” Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/13/24 Full Review Megan P I quit about halfway through. I really disliked the stilted dialogue/delivery, and.... Why wasn't a tox screen ran as soon as Martin revealed he was making everyone sick? It just seemed to be trying too hard to be unsettling and just ended up making me roll my eyes a lot instead.
