Critics Consensus

The Killing of a Sacred Deer continues director Yorgos Lanthimos' stubbornly idiosyncratic streak -- and demonstrates again that his is a talent not to be ignored.

SkyRo P I really wanted to enjoy "The Killing of a Sacred Deer," but despite my efforts, I struggled to connect with the film. It felt like everything moved at a glacial pace, from the direction to the dialogue, which made it difficult to stay engaged. I found myself focusing on Nicole Kidman's character, but she seemed either sidelined or excessively quiet throughout the film. It was frustrating because I felt like her talents were underutilized, and her character wasn't developed in a compelling way. Even with strong performances from Colin Farrell and Barry Keoghan, the movie ultimately fell flat for me. I wanted to dig deeper and appreciate its themes, but it felt disjointed and tedious instead. I tried my best to stay invested, but it ended up being a rather dull experience that left me feeling disconnected from the story. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/25 Full Review Aleksandar D The dialogues are what's going to put most people off, because they're the style of the director (he wants to make the characters intentionally robotic to portray a sort of social detachment of sorts). The movie is definitely a slow burn and even though it starts out quite intense, it doesn't really push through in the same tone until the end. I thought much more was going to happen, but nope. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/15/25 Full Review Dustin W A complete waste of two hours. It’s weird, boring, and uninteresting. The very monotonous and random monologues will put you to sleep. Not worth the time Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/25 Full Review Adam G Likely the worst movie I’ve ever seen that was trying to take itself seriously. It’s like a high school film student was given a few million dollars and left unsupervised. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Hope F In my 60 years of movie-watching, I’ve experienced films that were profoundly moving and others that were utterly forgettable. But this movie? It stands out as the single worst two hours I’ve ever endured in a theater. While some professional critics praised its “edgy” filmmaking, my bafflement and discomfort had nothing to do with artistic boldness. The acting was wooden, the storyline bizarre, and the writing downright amateurish. Given the star power involved, I expected it to at least be mediocre—perhaps even salvageable in parts. Instead, it was an unmitigated disaster. If negative star ratings existed, this film would deserve them. Seven years later, I still cringe whenever it’s mentioned. Whatever those glowing reviewers were drinking, I’ll have a double—because it’s the only way I could ever make sense of their praise. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/22/24 Full Review Graham M Another self indulgent piece of crap that disappears up its own arse. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/14/24 Full Review Read all reviews
