Moving tragedy set in an Italian village (around 1950?) where mafia-style revenge killing is the order of the day. The main story is a love story which ends tragically, sparking a sequence of retribution, but it also has a political dimension in that the farmers rebel against exploitative merchants and corrupt officials. Although the ending is surprisingly upbeat after all the gloom I don't find it corny (like others): it's the only possible way out of the dire circle. Dialogue is spare but effective, beautiful harsh photography. The English translation of the title is misleading as, in the Italian, Paradiso is ambivalent: on the one hand 'paradise' and on the other the name of the family.

Please watch something else...the plot is so basic that at times seems like a joke.You keep hoping it can't get any worse but it does and that keeps happening till the very end...so much so you're left speechless really. Such a shame as Scamarcio can really be a great actor and the landscapes of Puglia are beautiful. Speechless.

Awful awful awful movie. I'm an Italian emigrated in the US and this movie is stupidly wrong on all fronts. I checked out the director, and I was relieved to see he made only 3 movies. A better profession awaits him for sure.

Sensual, brutal, captivating and memorable. It's beautifully filmed in very ‘50s styles do for once, takes its time to unfurl. Only regret is the disconcerting change of genre at the end that breaks « believability »
