Critics Consensus

While The Last Starfighter is clearly derivative of other sci-fi franchises, its boundary-pushing visual effects and lovably plucky tone make for an appealing adventure.

Jake Cole Slant Magazine Perhaps the one area in which it’s ahead of its time is in its conceit of an arcade game being used as a military recruiting tool. May 5, 2023 Full Review Duane Byrge The Hollywood Reporter Writer Jonathan Betuel, to his credit, has invested a very human element in this film, an ingredient that all too many sci-fi, hardware presentations lack. Jul 13, 2022 Full Review Paul Taylor Financial Times An engaging enough comic fantasy for the post-'60s generation who've given up entirely on the Gutenberg Galaxy and are tracking Horatio Alger's footsteps via the video circuitry route. May 3, 2022 Full Review Nick Rogers Midwest Film Journal Careens with an unwieldy gait from one idea to the next, representing an admirable number of plates with a regrettable lack of hands to keep them spinning apace. It's basically a wonderful musical theme and a killer concept in search of high adventure. Rated: 2.5/5 Jul 24, 2024 Full Review Alan Jones Starburst Manages to draw some charm from its two-dimensional characters. Jul 21, 2022 Full Review William Wolf Gannett News Service The movie is entertaining in an unpretentious way. It also is extremely good-natured, despite the combat scenes, and some may find it a welcome relief from the summers more intense fantasy films. May 3, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Ch What a great revisiting of my childhood this was! I remember seeing this when I was young and jumped at the chance to see it on the big screen again! Thanks for showing great movies like this! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/27/24 Full Review Ryan Great story, though campy at times but thats part of charm Wonderful characters Dated graphics, program to date would make timeless. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/17/24 Full Review kevin c I just got out of this masterpiece. I was lucky enough to see this as a kid when I was 9. Ive watched this so many times Ive lost count, but seeing it on the big screen today was awesome. Happy 40th anniversary to The Last Starfighter Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/17/24 Full Review P F The evil Xur managed to escape at the end of the movie, leaving it open for a possible sequel that never came. The Last Starfighter wasn’t a financial disaster but like Tron didn’t make half what the studio predicted it would make. The rights to the film and a sequel also became a legal issue as Universal owned the theatrical and home media rights while after having absorbed Lorimar studio Warner Bros had international distribution rights, a reason that the UK never received a DVD or HD release for years until 2024. Steven Spielberg even tried to get a remake or sequel made without any success. It became a legal mess as no one seemed to know who had sequel or remake rights. I often bemoan 21st-century movies for mining nostalgia without understanding it or good storytelling. Filmmaking can’t stay the same of course yet the ability to sit down and have an imaginative time with a movie that isn’t cynical is lost today. The success of The Last Starfighter is that it continues to inspire and with a passionate, devoted fanbase behind it more newcomers discover this cult classic forty years later. Alex or Xur may have never returned but people can be safe in the knowledge that the film’s legacy continues today whether in home media, TV airings or fan conventions. Alex is still out there fighting the good fight against evil. The film is a cliché in the best possible way and something all writers today should aim for. That folks is a legacy built from imaginative storytelling which has stood the test of time and may it continue for years to come. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/26/24 Full Review Cohen V I really enjoyed and rewatching it in 2023 let me enjoy the gamification of a space battle even mote Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/22/24 Full Review Dallas H I fondly remember watching this movie when I was a kid. Now watching it as an adult nearly forty years after its initial release, I am mildly surprised at how flat and two-dimensional the CGI-created visual effects look on the big screen. I still got a kick out of watching the movie again. However, I now wonder how the hell a ten-year-old can accrue a stash of Playboy magazines without his mom finding out.
