In 18th-century Cuba, a clueless count (Nelson Villagra) wants to bring the light of religion into the lives of his slaves. And he can think of no better way to share the power of Christianity than to involve them in a staging of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper. After picking 12 of his slaves to serve as disciples, the count arranges them around the dinner table for a rather odd exchange of ideas. He considers the night a success -- until his slaves stage an uprising on Good Friday.

Nadine Smith Hyperallergic It looks like a Hollywood-style historical epic, but the film's surrealism disarms any sense of convention. Feb 25, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Tomás Gutierréz Alea brings us the 18th century to our eyes with wonderful wardrobe and splendid imagery, but also with clever dialogue, filming and social commentary. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Wow this movie is a hidden gem. Set in a sugar plantation of Cuba in the 18th century, the movie shows how a benevolent slave owner who washes the feet of his black slaves is the one who brutally suppresses the slaves' rebellion. Through the slave owner, the movie reveals the hypocrisy and contradictions of Christian doctrines that support slavery. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Alea reconciles his mid-career thoughtful art films with the subversive brilliance of his early works. It's gorgeously shot, funny, dark, disturbing, yet doesn't fall into nihilism. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Esa película es toda una perlita del cine cubano. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Don't just take this film on it's synopsis. It has social comment and viciousness to it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Great Cuban film that was unique in concept and foreign to the US movie market. Good time period to focus on.
