With a tradition that stretches back hundreds of years, the Palio di Siena -- the city of Siena, Italy's biannual horse race -- grips the area's different neighborhoods as they all battle for supremacy and the honor of winning the storied competition. Deciding to focus his lens on the efforts of the Civetta district, perennial losers who desperately desire to turn around their fortunes, filmmaker John Appel brings to light the passion and drive that possesses these dedicated competitors.

Audience Member a emotive documentary on the annual highlight of the owl-emblazoned Civetta Contrade (district/ward) of Siena, Italy. Many perspectives abound, but it's Egidio, the cheeky chatty gentleman of 92-years, and Alma, the old lady who's constantly ironing, that are most charming. You have to watch this to the end to feel some semblance of the full depth of emotion every Contrade-resident faces, old and young. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member the 92y/o gentleman in the docu is so cute!! great story-telling docu from the first person's perspective :) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Worth seeing if you've ever had an interest in the Palio di Siena. Manages to convey the passion and longing of a contrada and what it means to be part of that contrada.
