Critics Consensus

The Legend of Tarzan has more on its mind than many movies starring the classic character, but that isn't enough to make up for its generic plot or sluggish pace.

K. Austin Collins The Ringer The movie is so devoted to offering a clever course-correction of the Tarzan myth, while still staying true to that myth, that it overlooks its own impossibility. Aug 10, 2017 Full Review Dwight Brown National Newspaper Publishers Association Some things should be left in the past and forgotten. Case in point: Tarzan. Nov 8, 2016 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com While technical aspects are strong, especially as they pertain to the motion capture effects utilized to bring the African beasts running through the jungle to life, sadly this is the end of the good news. Rated: 1/4 Aug 9, 2016 Full Review Alejandro Turdó EscribiendoCine An interesting production that takes the best of the classic elements and updates certain tropes to deliver a film that entertains without being exhausting, creatively retelling a story we already know. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 23, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Its as though the filmmakers learned about the reality of the period in which their story takes place, and they became so disenchanted and obsessed with historical accuracy that they forgot to make an escapist adventure. Christie R I read all the Tarzan books. None of the Tarzan movies ever showed the apes as being different like they are in the book, this is the first movie I’ve ever seen where they actually showed that they were not Gorillas in the conventional sense. I thoroughly enjoyed the acting and thought Alexander Skarsgård did an amazing job of bringing Tarzan to life in a way that haven’t been done before. I don’t like that people seem to criticize this movie more than they just enjoy it for being fun. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/25 Full Review Thomas S A fantastic, beautifully filmed and well acted epic. Ignore the Rotten Tomatoes score Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/25 Full Review Alexander S The Legend of Tarzan barely swings to deliver a decent continuation of its well-known story. The cast delivers decent performances, and the CGI is alright, but the movie is slow, boring, and lacks an engaging story that would have satisfied fans of Tarzan with a solid action-adventure epic. Grading: C Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/17/25 Full Review Stephen C LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/29/24 Full Review Zara T A very enjoyable movie that I love watching. All the cast were great and memorable. Just a really good movie that is entertaining. What a movie should be. Epic scenery and Animals that were so life like. Bravo to all involved! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/05/24 Full Review Myles F I don’t know what the hell the reviews are about previously but this movie is excellent… Action packed, romantic, beautiful scenery, absolutely incredible character portrayal… Did any of these reviewers even watch the damn movie? This movie is nowhere near deserving of the low score it gets on this review site! Zeke Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review Read all reviews
