Critics Consensus

The Leisure Seeker certainly doesn't suffer from any shortage of acting talent, but it's largely squandered on a predictable, diffuse drama with little to say.

Finding any comedy in aggressive diseases requires a delicacy of tone absent from this plodding adaptation of Michael Zadoorian's novel. Go to Full Review

[The Leisure Seeker] is a predictable scenario. It can't be anything else. But these two great talents invest it with humanity and courage in the face of its inescapable home truths. Go to Full Review

a bold, convincing story of courage and resilience that is all but predictable, and moves and entertains exactly in the right measure and right up till the very end. Go to Full Review

The stars glide through the spotty material finding humanity and the touching moments tucked away in this overly sentimental travelogue. Go to Full Review

David H Nov 21 The actors are top-notch, but I think that the plot and the theme are flawed. Some of the interesting events just pop out of nowhere, with no earlier development. But in the end, the murder-suicide by the wife only suggests that she really had no care for him. I have cared for many older people in my day, and my experience is that just because a person is losing memory does not mean that they do not enjoy life, or that their life is worthless. Killing an innocent person who has no knowledge of what is happening, who actually trusts the killer, is a terrible act. The film seems to advocate that we kill off old people so that the next generation has no burdens, but still gets the inheritance. I suspect that a lot of people like this idea, because seniors are often discarded in the United States. Maybe some are even convinced that they are useless, that their lives have no purpose. Cruel and inhuman. See more J N Apr 9 I admire their relationship, which lasted into old age. Some aspects were very touching, but the plot twists and simplistic resolutions left me feeling confused. In summary, I find this to be an intriguing road movie; however, the pacing of the plot is somewhat disorienting, and the ending took so fast by surprise. See more Laura W Feb 14 TLS is a moving tribute to the mighty talents of Dame Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland in their later years. Fans of NOMADLAND and the Winnebago scenes in FRASIER should enjoy their picaresque misadventures throughout the American South in various states of consciousness. See more Georgan G 05/25/2024 This movie was offensive in so many ways. The wife could not accept the husband's dementia so was cruel to him every time he couldn't remember something. She also did not keep an eye on him, so problems ensured from that. And the finale of murder-suicide is SO AGEIST! So, all infirm people should end it all? See more Tom W 10/15/2023 I would have preferred a faster pace. Some of the humor wasn't so funny. And I got quite tired of their son's whining. Having said that, I enjoyed the movie. Mirren & Sutherland are well paired. Under the circumstances, I think the ending was an agreeable one. I'm 79 years old, a year older than Mirren & 9 yrs younger than Southerland. The movie struck more chords for me than it would have 20-30 years ago. Janis Joplin singing "Me & Bobby McGee" fit perfectly. "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose." See more 04/05/2022 A movie that resonates with an older crowd and hits so many points dead on. I do not know how I would've felt about this movie in my younger years, but I think it's a great conversation piece for multi-geberational families. See more Read all reviews
