What to Know

Critics Consensus

Showing a sweeter side of director Mike Flanagan's deeply-felt emotional register, The Life of Chuck is a buoyant and often wonderful adaptation of one of Stephen King's more cosmically optimistic tales.

Audience Says

The Life of Chuck refreshingly defies the norm, delivering a heartfelt non-linear experience that brings joy in the form of a dancing Tom Hiddleston.

Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle The movie is maudlin and pessimistic and features a mildly sardonic voiceover narration by Nick Offerman that only serves to distance us from the action. Rated: 1/4 Jun 23, 2025 Full Review Max Weiss Baltimore Magazine Although its unusual structure and smidge of Stephen King weirdness (it’s based on one of his novellas) saves it from being a complete washout. Rated: 2/4 Jun 23, 2025 Full Review Richard Brody The New Yorker Unlike horrors and dreams and fantasies, the imaginary world that dominates The Life of Chuck is utterly devoid of personality. The trickery of its creation is clever but impersonal for reasons that go beyond the story’s stiff detail-twiddling. Jun 18, 2025 Full Review Alyshia Kelly InBetweenDrafts A quietly powerful film about finding meaning in the moments that slip by unnoticed. Rated: 8/10 Jul 24, 2025 Full Review Sean P. Means The Movie Cricket There’s stuff in this movie that should make even the hardest heart weep, but those things get caught up in Flanagan’s intricate mechanism and never have the desired effect. Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 18, 2025 Full Review Sammie Purcell Rough Draft Atlanta A movie about a little boy who loves Gene Kelly movies and just wants to dance? I was never NOT going to love this one, and it's got the heart to back up the premise. Jul 18, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Eddie This went from existentialist to introspective REAL quick, and it completely broke me. In the best way. I think this film encapsulates all the fears of the modern world. Of what it feels like to watch the news, and to be afraid, and all at once grateful that at least you still have today. It emphasizes the importance of living for yourself and appreciating the beauty that is existence by reminding us it won't last forever. I need to sit quietly in a room and think for a few days now. I also need to go back to dancing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/25/25 Full Review Susan Nice sentiment of enjoying the ordinary moments of life, but it sometimes felt like there were too many disconnected parts. What was the deal with all the projections on the houses? Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/21/25 Full Review Mr. Lechuga This movie is great! Every act just got better and better. Loved the story and hit me in the feels. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/21/25 Full Review Hans D One word - beautiful Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/21/25 Full Review Josh T This Stephen King film is in the "Matrix" genre of Sci-Fi films that consider the question of whether reality is something objective that happens "out there" or is primarily an internal mental construct and thus possibly illusory. It is less ambitious but better than "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once" because it has no loose ends--it is artistically harmonious and parsimonious and very pleasant to watch, particularly now that most films have no intelligent content, but are just about violence, stupid "superpowers" or raunchy sex. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/20/25 Full Review Oscar M It will make you smile. And the less you know before you go, the better. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/18/25 Full Review Read all reviews
