This was a pleasant surprise apart from the songs not obviously being as good as the original but the story is actually really compelling taking the Romeo & Juliet format for The Lion King is actually very compelling and the story is told quite effectively with engaging characters. Yes it does feel like a direct to video sequel so it's quality is not as good but this is generally quite good.

2.86. The film is a worthy collection to the Lion King franchise, but for a variety of reasons, falls way short of the original film in quality. Among them are what seem clear are attempts to connect different story elements. That attempt is confusing.
