Critics Consensus

The Lords of Salem has lots of atmospheric portent, but it's unfortunately short on scares.

Drew Hunt Chicago Reader Polished and calculated, this is a nerve-shattering fright fest bolstered by immaculate technique. Apr 25, 2013 Full Review Ian Buckwalter The Atlantic It's a credit to Zombie's interest in growing as an artist that he's drawing from more mature inspirations here, but it's also part of why the movie doesn't work. Rated: 4.5/10 Apr 19, 2013 Full Review V.A. Musetto New York Post Movies by Rob Zombie, the goth rocker turned cult filmmaker, aren't for everybody. But he couldn't care less. Rated: 3/4 Apr 19, 2013 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh Zombie finally abandons his "hellbilly" aesthetic for something more hypnotic and meditative, resulting in a hallucinatory brain-melter that marks the peak of his directing career. Rated: 5/5 Sep 20, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Neither suspenseful nor disturbing as intended, The Lords of Salem may resist Zombie’s previous shock-fest style, but his detour into goat-sacrificing Satanism doesn’t prove any more watchable. Rated: 1/4 Sep 6, 2022 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast An atmospheric and enthralling take on demonic possession featuring a stacked cast of female genre stars. Low-key Zombie and Sheri Moon's best film Rated: 4 Mar 9, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Jason W Had a strong start minus the obligatory Rob Zombie naked women scenes. Definitely a departure from his usual cursing, dirty hillbilly stuff except the church scene and the ending, where he jumped back into needing awkward forced weird sex stuff to fill a scene so it could "edgy". Too many dream sequences. Pretty decent story and mostly shot well otherwise. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review Lochia E Worthy of wasting your time. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/27/25 Full Review Zaqir V It’s the greatest movie ever made about witches and velvet underground and you’re a weiner if you think otherwise. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/25 Full Review Austin G Very slow moving. It was difficult to find any personal connection to the characters. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/26/25 Full Review thiago s Filme mais ou menos, o roteiro é mais ou menos, o filme tem mulheres peladas, coisas de satanismo e nudez. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/14/25 Full Review Peter G Dark, stylish, disturbing, surreal, amazing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/07/25 Full Review Read all reviews
