Critics Consensus

The Lords of Salem has lots of atmospheric portent, but it's unfortunately short on scares.

Drew Hunt Chicago Reader Polished and calculated, this is a nerve-shattering fright fest bolstered by immaculate technique. Apr 25, 2013 Full Review Ian Buckwalter The Atlantic It's a credit to Zombie's interest in growing as an artist that he's drawing from more mature inspirations here, but it's also part of why the movie doesn't work. Rated: 4.5/10 Apr 19, 2013 Full Review V.A. Musetto New York Post Movies by Rob Zombie, the goth rocker turned cult filmmaker, aren't for everybody. But he couldn't care less. Rated: 3/4 Apr 19, 2013 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh Zombie finally abandons his "hellbilly" aesthetic for something more hypnotic and meditative, resulting in a hallucinatory brain-melter that marks the peak of his directing career. Rated: 5/5 Sep 20, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Neither suspenseful nor disturbing as intended, The Lords of Salem may resist Zombie’s previous shock-fest style, but his detour into goat-sacrificing Satanism doesn’t prove any more watchable. Rated: 1/4 Sep 6, 2022 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast An atmospheric and enthralling take on demonic possession featuring a stacked cast of female genre stars. Emma L 1/5 This film held some promise at the start, the backstory seemed interesting and the Salem witch trials are something many find interesting, however this film was a complete disaster. Sheri Moons acting was dull and lacklustre, and instead and making you feel empathetic towards her character who was evidently going through it, you just felt boredom. The cinematics were the only half interesting thing about the film, the visuals were semi okay but again I felt fell flat and lacked interest. Overall I wouldn't recommend Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/13/24 Full Review Catelyn T If it weren't for Zombie's style (which I love), there would be nothing likable about this film. The acting is bad, and the story is even worse. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/05/24 Full Review Yuri M It’s was kind of boring I need to rewatch Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/29/24 Full Review Thirdi A Love Rob Zombie. This was boiling hot caca. So boring with bad acting. Visually it is very good but the story has tiny payoffs Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/27/24 Full Review Audience Member Possibly Rob Zombies best film Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/20/24 Full Review Marc Z This movie is a little different from many of Rob Zombie's other films. It is less grotesque, and less scary, but it is a more mature horror tale in many other respects. The acting by Sheri Moon Zombie, as has been written in many other articles is the best of her career, and the best in a Zombie film. While this is not my favorite Rob Zombie movie it is one of his best. Zombie amazes me in his deep, rich understanding of the history of horror films. This one is deeply rooted in the English derivative horror films of the 1970's. There are elements of Rosemary's baby and The Omen, as well. The story, the filmmaking, the Direction, the Cinematography, and the special Effects are top notch. As always, the music is seminal to the experience. Great find.
