It takes forever to get going, seems to give away where it’s headed early on, and traffics in modestly tense moments, melodrama and the mysteries of hypnosis to such a degree that it’s never much more than a a mild mannered bore.

As you might surmise, there is a final act twist that the film seems to be very proud of, but again the bad pacing and abrupt denouement only add frustration to the proceedings, and it does not save the film in any way.

The movie is a masterpiece. The intrigue is held right to the end. It gives insight into the damaging and dangerous practice of neglectful and ignorant parenting. How wonderful it would be if all parents of small children could watch this movie, to understand how much careful and considerate parenting is required to release a healthy human being into the world. The psychologist is delicately portrayed by presenting herself firstly, as possibly a villain in the plot, but progressing by using her expertise to understand, and most importantly, to forgive. The cast brilliantly brings this intricate plot to life. This movie should have received many awards.

Der Patient ist ein Drama und Thriller von Christophe Charrier… Der 19-jährige Thomas wacht nach drei Jahren im Koma in einem Krankenhaus auf. Er erinnert sich an nichts… Christophe Charrier inszenierte diesen Film in einem langsamen Tempo, so dass die Geschwindigkeit der Geschichte voll angemessen ist… Ja, es ist ein guter Film, die Schauspieler haben ein hervorragendes Spiel geleistet, und die Musik ist nahe perfekt…Die Geschichte war für mich unterhaltsam, vielleicht nicht ganz perfekt, aber insgesamt gut.

It is a slow burner and a little bit creepy at times, but I do like movies that take a surprise twist at the ending. The story/background of the parents could have been developed more without revealing much of anything to come later in the film.
