Virginia Graham The Spectator [Rita Hayworth] is the very essence of all musical-comedy Carmens, twirling about in mauve taffeta with a rose, peeking up at her lovers with coy and twinkling eyes and biting her rivals to the bone. James B Each time I watch a Rita Hayworth movie, I do so to rid myself of the nagging suspicion that she can’t act, but this movie only reinforces that thought. If there ever was a movie in which she should have excelled, it would have been this one. Trained in Flamenco from an early age, possessed with a great amount of natural beauty, and being Spanish herself, one would think she would subsume the role, but that never happens. She just isn’t vamp-y enough. Too soft. Not edgy. No magnetism. She doesn’t “Carelessly cut you and laugh while you’re bleeding.” To quote Billy Joel. The other actors, with the exception of Ford, put on a fine performance. There just isn’t any chemistry between the two leads. Ford’s reactions remind me of Jeff Spiccoli: “Dude! That was my head!” Numb. Watch it if you must. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/18/24 Full Review Audience Member Outstanding acting of Rita Hayworth as the temperamental and manipulative Carmen who seduces her men as she desires. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review ashley h The Loves of Carmen is a decent film. It is about a beautiful but amoral gypsy girl entices a young dragoon to betray his honor. Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford give good performances. The screenplay is a little slow in places. Charles Vidor did an alright job directing this movie. I liked this motion picture because of the adventure and drama. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Horrible script, juvenile acting by Hayworth and Ford. Since they were capable of more, this shows the power of the script. Why would such a monstrosity be green-lighted? Columbia seemed to lack the experience of bigger studios because they churned out so many clunkers that should have been stopped pre-production. This is a prime example of the drecks the industry could produce. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member After seeing Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford in :The Loves of Carmen" last night on TCM, I have a real appreciation of why Rita Hayworth was such a huge box office draw. She was exciting to watch and it's easy to see how so many men were mesmerized by her beauty and spunk! Glenn Ford was perfect or the role of Don Jose as well. I'd watch this movie again! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member rita in technicolor who wouldn't like this also pairing #2 of rita and glenn ford Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Read all reviews
