Audience Member Bill Camp ultimately turns in a very convincing performance in this somewhat limp indie that lacks a conclusion. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review farouk b Promising thriller, but not very well developed and mediocrely finished. Paula Garcés' performance is one of the few good things about this movie. Once she is out of the scene, the story deteriorated rapidly and never gained coherence again. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Seriously! No definitive ending, lousy acting, A real POS! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review kevin c A wealthy family hires a Colombian woman as their live in maid, tensions rise when she becomes aware of some wrongdoing from their young adult son which puts her in an unenviable situation. Story for this was told well and compelling even though it's not exactly original, but the performances and pacing were more than enjoyable with a couple turns I didn't see coming. Good flick. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A not bad caper gag. A little silly but it works. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review ronald h Critics have hammered this film for its glaring symbolism and its not-so-subtle socio-economic message: The super rich are snooty, arrogant, and evil, and the working class are honest, ethical, and honorable. Yeah, it's simplistic, but it works well anyway, in spite of ever-increasing plot silliness. Paula Garces is well cast as Drina the maid, an illegal Colombian immigrant hired by a wealthy Long Island family to keep their summer mansion spiffy while they are away and their teenage son is having a leisurely break before he goes off to Princeton in the fall. The son comes home drunk one night in a wrecked car. When the parents return, he claims that he hit a deer, but Drina discovers that he killed a man on the road and left the scene. The father, a really rotten guy played by Bill Camp, realizes what happened and offers Drina an envelope full of money to leave the place and keep quiet. She refuses the bribe, insisting that he call the cops. I'll stop here, because there is one hell of a turn halfway through. Why did I like this movie more than I should have? The acting, aside from Garces, is middling, and the second half degenerates pretty far into absurdity. I liked it anyway. I guess I'm just a Marxist at heart! The cinematography is excellent, belying the film's modest budget, and the soundtrack music elevates the suspense. Those two elements lend a bit of a Hitchcock feel to The Maid's Room. Not that it's on Hitchcock's level--it's not. But it's still worth a watch. Haters of the 1 percent will appreciate it. As to the critics who have complained that the film portrays both the rich and the working class as stereotypes, all I can say is so what? Stereotypes don't come out of nowhere; they derive from reality. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Ben Kenigsberg New York Times "The Maid's Room" has much to recommend, including the versatile Mr. Camp in a Machiavellian role. But it doesn't marshal its twists toward a convincing or satisfying conclusion. Aug 7, 2014 Full Review Inkoo Kang Los Angeles Times [A] sly, satisfying thriller about class, status and violence. Aug 7, 2014 Full Review Andrew O'Hehir Salon.com "The Maid's Room" doesn't quite work, intriguing premise and all, and that the fault lies with Walker's labored script and wooden characterization. Aug 7, 2014 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com The Maid's Room is a mixed bag of interesting ideas lost in a sea of underdevelopment.
