Emmanuel Courcol’s Gallic charmer is nevertheless the film we need right now: a story in which people learn to be their best selves; that pays respect to working communities torn apart by the global economy; a story, moreover, centred on a brass band. Go to Full Review

The predictable elements are mitigated by lived-in performances from an engaging cast of French character actors, and a closing sequence so shamelessly and cheerfully manipulative that any resistance is entirely useless. Go to Full Review

It's very amiable fare, or fanfare... in a way, that joke is on par with the tone of the film. Go to Full Review

A huge hit in its native France, this uplifting, moving and subtly funny affair has been making friends right around the world. Go to Full Review

Good performances compensate a script uninterested in going beyond simplicity. One of those light experiences that we should all enjoy once in a way, with a healthy dose of tears, laughter and the societal power of music. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Howie B @Howie10 Jan 4 Perhaps a recognisable storyline of sorts. Adopted-out siblings separated. One knows this, the other doesn’t. Circumstances conspire to bring them together as adults in their late 30’s. Apart from this, the specific story here holds up very well. Strong characters with a welcomed musical backdrop. Couldn’t help also thinking it could easily have been set in northern England or even the Midwest USA. Perhaps this worked in the film’s favour drawing natural empathy from the non-French audience. Actors gave strong performances and the pace was ‘pitch perfect’ (apologies for the pun) throughout. As always I was front row so the subtitles were at eye level and not obscured by heads of others. Perfect place for a sub-titled film. You miss none of the plot, which I note one other audience reviewer certainly did! (It only took me 40 years to figure out where the best seats in the house are for a foreign language film.) See more Daniel H @nihilhonestum Jan 2 With cliched setups like thus, you really Need fantastic characters and dialogue which this doesn’t have. The pacing almost made it bearable. What confused me the most were the clunky narrative devices. Why the second band in a factory? A film that retreads it’s own narrative device it got away with once trying it again just irked me. The factory music scene was a very odd add on indeed and did very little to serve the story. A film that goes for the very obvious and doesn’t deserve its crescendo ending. An unsophisticated movie shopping around cheap tricks. See more Bill V @aerondor Dec 29 This was a lovely movie. Especially if you like classical music. A heartwarming story about discovering connections. Where I saw it, it was released as "My Brother's Band". It would be great if RT allowed searching by that name as well. See more Evan C Nov 24 Emmanuel Courcol's #TheMarchingBand finds its resonance in the dynamic of its leads & the focus on its music. But the small town drama & its quirky inhabitants can feel a bit one-note. That said, the emotional crescendo at the end is well-earned & moving, and well worth a watch. See more Rodrick S @Rodrigo Jul 22 It’s an excellent film… A very moving story with a deep human connection between to brothers that reunite. The music is beautiful See more Karen-Suzanne C May 12 The central theme of MUSIC knitted the story together beautifully, and made up for any other mild lacking, plus the authentic characters giving it a fresh raw edge of love, friendship, and family. A confirmation that music has a force and language of its own, that bridges cultural and social differences. Entertaining and moving. See more Read all reviews
