Sarah Mirk Bitch Media While it's sweeping in scope, the documentary does an admirable job explaining how our culture creates masculinity. It makes a point, too, to frame the conversation at the outset by differentiating sex and gender. Feb 3, 2021 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg Variety Reductive and sensationalistic correlations detract from the movie's salient points. Feb 6, 2015 Full Review Brian Gibson Vue Weekly (Edmonton, Alberta) It overstates -- and over-stats -- its case, at times making that case as overly simplistic and over-determined as it argues American masculinity is. Mar 30, 2017 Full Review Emily Wheeler Film Inquiry While not fully achieving its goals, The Mask You Live In presents enough thought-provoking material in a digestible manner to get people interested. Dec 6, 2016 Full Review S. Jhoanna Robledo Common Sense Media Moving documentary examines what it means to be a man. Rated: 4/5 Jun 12, 2015 Full Review Fred Topel Nuke the Fridge The Mask You Live In is an important movie but it's not a "take your medicine" kind of important movie. Rather, it empowers a man to be the person he wants to be, not the one others are pressuring him to be. Feb 3, 2015 Full Review Read all reviews

Mark F As a male born and raised in America, I really appreciate this film and its message! It saddens me to read the negative reviews. So many people prefer to keep their "blinders" on and fail to appreciate scientific research. Some people are even labeling it as "anti-male" which is FAR from the TRUTH---this film promotes HEALTHY masculinity (beneficial to males)! For those of you stating that the film argues American masculinity is the "ROOT CAUSE" of most of modern society's problems, you are INCORRECT! Stop thinking so dichotomously! The film illustrates how it is a CONTRIBUTING FACTOR to the issues mentioned...NOT the sole reason. The film focuses on drawing the connection between the problems and masculinity because that is the FOCUS of the film. An entirely separate documentary could be made on each of the issues because they are complex! The negative reviews speak to how there is a profound lack of appreciation and utilization of science in America. Unfortunately, political hyperpolarization and the spread of misinformation are only making this problem worse. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/20/23 Full Review Pablo R A very biased view of society. The movie seems to start with the assumption that men and masculinity is a problem in society. It places the blame at the feet of boys and tells them they need to change. Views expressed in the movie are not supported by psychological research. It suggests sex and gender are two different things and that behaviour is purely learnt. This is not supported by research. Different behaviours are demonstated in boys and girls from the time they are born. Girls are more interested in faces from birth. Boys and girls act differntly even in the first few years of life before they have been "taught" how to act. This difference in behaviour is demonstated even in young primates who have not been socialised by human society. The movie seems to be very Americanised feminist propaganda. It doesn't point out that most men are decent caring individuals and that it is only a tiny portion of men in society who behave in the ways suggested in the film. It also present sex, and mens views of sex, in a way that is not reflective of most men. I can see why many of comments by women about this movie are positive, the movie takes a very feminine view of life and society. I am sure if this movie suggested women were the cause of problems in society and suggested they change their behaviour, this movie would never see the light of day. The movie also seems to suggest that being white somehow leads to bad behaviour. This movie SHOULD NOT be used in an educational environment, it does raise some issue that could lead to some helpful discussion but sadly it is wrapped in propaganda that is NOT based in good research. Don't let your sons watch this, have the discussions yourself. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/25/23 Full Review Audience Member I was in shock the entire time. It makes a lot of things make a lot of sense, and I think everyone (men included and especially) should watch this. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member A must see for everyone. I cried at how much healing our society needs. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Anti male and anti porn Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Great discussion for our society. As a male, I identified myself on several points and on many histories, and realized how harmful the male construction is for the hole society.
