Sarah Mirk Bitch Media While it's sweeping in scope, the documentary does an admirable job explaining how our culture creates masculinity. It makes a point, too, to frame the conversation at the outset by differentiating sex and gender. Feb 3, 2021 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg Variety Reductive and sensationalistic correlations detract from the movie's salient points. Feb 6, 2015 Full Review Brian Gibson Vue Weekly (Edmonton, Alberta) It overstates -- and over-stats -- its case, at times making that case as overly simplistic and over-determined as it argues American masculinity is. Mar 30, 2017 Full Review Emily Wheeler Film Inquiry While not fully achieving its goals, The Mask You Live In presents enough thought-provoking material in a digestible manner to get people interested. Dec 6, 2016 Full Review S. Jhoanna Robledo Common Sense Media Moving documentary examines what it means to be a man. Rated: 4/5 Jun 12, 2015 Full Review Fred Topel Nuke the Fridge The Mask You Live In is an important movie but it's not a "take your medicine" kind of important movie. Rather, it empowers a man to be the person he wants to be, not the one others are pressuring him to be. Feb 3, 2015 Full Review Read all reviews

Samantha B I found this film to be eye-opening. As a woman it showed me a lot of the struggles males deal with growing up that I was unaware of. I really enjoyed this film and it had a lot of interesting statistics and I liked how it showed and interviewed males of all ages. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/13/24 Full Review Grace N This film made me text all of the important men in my life to apologize to them for how mistreated they are by society and the expectations and gender stereotypes they have been forced into. This film left me in tears and made me reevaluate how I listen to and check in on the boys and men in my life. The way this film tackles the idea of having emotions is so impactful because teaching a small group of kids sitting in a circle that they don’t have to have a “mask” also teaches the male audience. It makes the rest of the audience think about how they see and interact with the boys and men in their lives. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/12/24 Full Review Xavier P An undeniably important documentary of its time directed by a female director. The things talked about in the film might be cliche from today's perspective, but they are the quintessential subjects needed to understand the universal and harmful phenomenon of toxic masculinity. The suppression of feelings and identities and conformity breeds violence——this is one of the biggest lessons history has taught us humans, and it's fascinating that this is shown just through the men in our society. Again, important for its time. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/12/24 Full Review Kate S I thought this did a good job at highlighting the stories of younger men. Seeing them talk about their own experiences rather than just hearing adults and psychologists talk about what they are experiencing in theory was really refreshing, and it made the documentary that much more impactful. Being able to relate real stories to real boys experiencing them was very touching. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/10/24 Full Review Tati P I liked this film because of the way it showed the high expectations that boys and men go through everyday. They are expected to be “strong” and “tough” and be able to “endure anything”, but the aspect of this film that I liked was how it depicted the way that these expectations have mentally affected men and have sort of “eaten them up” inside. The film had a very strong underlying message that no matter what gender, man or woman, everyone goes through struggles and it is okay to admit that you need help. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/09/24 Full Review Alina Z This film explores the effects of toxic masculinity and those who are still discovering their identities. Growing up, it was expected for males to act masculine and take on more responsibilities, so I could understand the need to “act like a man” and hold in emotions. I find this film meaningful, especially in this changing world, because societal roles shouldn’t be defined by gender, instead, they should be determined by one’s role in life, such as a single father being both a mother and father figure in a child’s life.
