It is better to read the book before, because the movie is a more articulated develop of it. See more Frank S May 8 I don't know if anybody who has no connection to the history of the twenties and thirties in the Soviet Union can accept this film. But for me this sujet is a perfect match to superman or Batman - the dream of a supernatural force to fight the devil. In this case the devil himself which is pretty ironic and funny without loosing the tragedy of this time. Two and a half hours is long, but I didn't mind. I enjoyed every minute.
