Critics Consensus

The Mercy sails on Colin Firth's layered central performance, which adds necessary depth and nuance that the story sometimes lacks.

Rex Reed Observer It all seems doomed from the start-and never in the same throat-gripping class with such fateful horrors-at-sea epics as Adrift or Robert Redford's All is Lost. Rated: 2/4 Nov 30, 2018 Full Review Peter Sobczynski RogerEbert.com The film has been made with plenty of sincerity and no small amount of effort, but with no idea of what it wants to say. Rated: 2/4 Nov 30, 2018 Full Review Kerry Lengel Arizona Republic An engrossing character study of an ordinary man whose extraordinary ambition proves his undoing. Rated: 3.5/5 Nov 29, 2018 Full Review Diana Tuova Spotlight on Film The Mercy cannot keep itself afloat and never quite manages to raise its sails up, portraying a very predictable (to the point of boring) voyage, with an almost unconvincing and foolish “hero”-character at its centre. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 9, 2024 Full Review Yasser Medina Cinefilia This biographical drama is simple, restrained, without much pretense of greatness, but the story it exhibits conveys the sense of tragedy that haunts the protagonist. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 7/10 Jun 27, 2020 Full Review Simon Reynolds Den of Geek What's great about The Mercy is how it manages to surprise, both in the story it's telling and how Marsh gradually shifts the tone. Christopher P We all lie about our aspirations and achievements, not in order to attain advancement, nor to receive plaudits and advancement. This film shows an individuals poorly planned and underfunded attempt at a sort of desire to put his stamp on history whilst embracing ametueism. All of us would like to beat the odds in some way, be an unsung hero in some fashion. What is inconceivable to me is how he could have left such a great life behind. . Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/07/24 Full Review Michael S Recommended watch. Not action packed but a great view into the mindset of a man of the old ways and "tough upper lip" mentality... A view into the troubles of a man who dared to be... A tale of woe from a hero! Firth as aways captivates! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/24 Full Review Shock Therapy R This is a beautiful and conflicted movie about frailty … and death is the mercy. Frailty is putting everything on the line and taking the risk and then realizing that the cosmic forces will eventually damn everyone. But the part in the middle of this human certainty is the part where you persevere to leave your mark, against all odds, and when losing it all—dignity and all—you are faced with this decision: go back to (‘wherever back is') ‘to write about places you've never seen', or … well, that's the frailty. What is authenticity? What is genuineness when you've lost? Does the goddamned ego blur one's vision? Or, is ego and human understanding all that we've got? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/19/22 Full Review isla s This is a film which tells an interesting, if obviously depressing, story. I wasn't aware of the story prior to watching the film and watching it made me curious to see a documentary or something more factual that investigates what may have taken place. It is a bit of a slow moving film I suppose, with the main plot not fully getting 'underway' until close to half an hour into the films running time, although the build up does give us an idea of how close the main character, Donald, was to his family (wife and sons). I felt it was a bit cheesy how scenes of Donald's struggles on board would cut straight to memories of happier times back 'on dry land', from many years ago. If your someone who looks for constant action in such films, then this will likely seem a bit slow and plodding and may well not hold your attention. However, I think it does well at highlighting the perhaps danger of male masculinity or the over competitiveness in some such people? if you know what I mean. Its a thought provoking watch, although not exactly greatly compelling visually, it may well provide proverbial food for thought, in relation to both people's strive for success, male masculinity/machismo and enforced/continual isolation. I would only recommend this film if your particularly interested in the main story. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Great, thought-provoking character study. How one man's dream turned into a trap...and the impact this had on him and his family. Be careful what you wish for! Fabulous period details. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review tom m Here's a movie with A-list actors, but a story that I found lacking. I didn't appreciate it all that much.
