Audience Member The way Italians are depicted in this 1957 story adds considerable interest to the film. In fact the two main actors were not Italian at all, though their looks and acting skills made them quite convincing. Tony Curtis, of Jewish Hungarian origins, plays Joe Martini, a humble traffic cop who grew up an orphan under the care of father Tomasini who is stabbed to death in the opening frames of the film. Gilbert Roland, of Mexican origins, plays Silvio Malatesta, a handsome fishmonger with a troubled but puzzling history. The love interest is provided by good-looking Marisa Pavan, a real Italian, who plays Anna. Of course Joe falls for her, who wouldn't? But the real interest of the story is how a murderer is depicted as being essentially generous, warm and very likeable . Unusual for Hollywood films of the time.
