Audience Member It's only when you see a movie like this that you realise how feeble and dismal most of the stuff on offer actually is. I guess you could pigeonhole it as a 'heart-warming British comedy' but you'd be selling it short. Mental illness is no joke and the film doesn't shy away from the harsh realities. What makes it bearable is what makes life itself bearable - the ability to see the funny side, our clumsy attempts to look after one another and the joy we can find in simple things. Very few movies these days attempt to portray life as it is lived by ordinary people. This one does. If it occasionally veers into sentimentality it's because that's what real people do. Psychopaths do exist, but if an alien intelligence were to try to understand human life from our movies, they could be forgiven for thinking they were the norm. If what you want from a movie is gun-fights, car chases and two-dimensional heroes, watch something else. If you're hungry for something entertaining watch this. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Really enjoyed this - weird as it explores mental health. Sheridan Smith plays the psychotic Mum. Well written by Jo Brand. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review nilufer e I had this movie for so long and I could't watch it because of lack of subtitles, hard for me to understand the strong accent and it was worth the wait. I really liked the whole lot. The plot, the acting, realness and the quirkiness. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review matt c A weak story of a mothers mental health problems that directly effects her long suffering family. Its a comedy with nothing to laugh about, more about dysfunction and how they deal with the growing problems. The highlight is music by The Smiths, the low point is everything else. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A masterpiece. You should all see it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review jeff h A few good gags. But not much originality. Peter Bradshaw Guardian It is a bit rough around the edges at times, with some pretty broad dramatic effects, but the narrative motor keeps humming and the sheer force of sympathy drives it along. Rated: 4/5 Jul 6, 2018 Full Review Robbie Collin Daily Telegraph (UK) An appealing, bittersweetly funny tale of a Morrissey-mad teenage girl whose life is regularly derailed by her mother's worsening mental state. Rated: 3/5 Jul 5, 2018 Full Review Olivia Simonds Bust Magazine Buoyant yet unpredictable, the film shows us that family ties and youthful imagination are not mutually exclusive... Apr 23, 2021 Full Review Kyle Bain Film Threat While it might not be a good comedy, it is a great drama. Rated: 9/10 Dec 6, 2020 Full Review Jackie K. Cooper jackiekcooper.com A hard look at emotional instability but the drama and comedy never mesh and remain jarringly apart. Rated: 5/10 Oct 22, 2020 Full Review Kat Halstead Common Sense Media Warm British comedy deals with mental health, adult themes. Rated: 3/5 Oct 19, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews
