David V This film was mesmerizing and proof that small budgets and casts can bring truly impactful and stirring cinema to audiences. One must be able to tolerate long periods of no dialogue and little dynamics to appreciate the director's skill. The backdrop of the Himalayas is definitely a major reason for the success of the composition. This film is a beautiful symphony with a small human chorus on which we focus through the backdrop. The message of following one's heart is unmistakable. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/10/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Deborah Young Hollywood Reporter This first feature by New York-based filmmaker Cheung-Lau is certainly evocative, but it's difficult to say of what. Jan 30, 2020 Full Review Vadim Rizov Filmmaker Magazine Not everything was so original, but my pulse slowed pleasurably nonetheless—it was a pleasant waystation between more typical Sundance fare. Dec 1, 2022 Full Review Therese Lacson Nerdophiles It is not something to understand but rather something to experience. The Mountains turns film-watching into a near-meditative experience. Rated: 3.5/5 Mar 3, 2021 Full Review Janet Lee Film Inquiry Despite the large void in its narrative, The Mountains Are a Dream that Call to Me is clearly an ambitious production, and Cheung-Lau impressively and gorgeously brings his vision to life. Feb 5, 2020 Full Review Jordan Raup The Film Stage If a mountain-climbing adventure like Everest or Vertical Limit removed its bombastic thrill-seeking setpieces and was instead directed with the patient, reverent eye of Apichatpong Weerasethakul one may conjure up something like Mountains. Rated: B Feb 2, 2020 Full Review Matt Cipolla The Spool The movie itself might stay the same, but what's on-screen is shifting, and the audience's perception even more so.
