Peter Debruge Variety A toothless ode to a still-living celebrity, it's a film that may appeal to very young children and very old ladies, but seems sure to bore everyone in between. Feb 3, 2018 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times A range-constricted slog through the dreariest of showbiz-ascension clichs. Feb 1, 2018 Full Review Frank Scheck The Hollywood Reporter It's the cinematic equivalent of listening to opera in an elevator. Feb 1, 2018 Full Review Emilie Black Cinema Crazed The Sound of Silence is a stunning film visually about a singer with a fantastic voice, but the story is not all that exciting. Rated: 2.5/5 Apr 12, 2020 Full Review Javier Ocaña El Pais (Spain) A compendium of self-help clichés, of melodramatic anecdotes about an artist who surely did not deserve such a stale production. Audience Member Beautiful story with pleasing actors and the soundtrack of Andrea Bocelli. Add in the courage of a young man facing blindness amidst the glorious Tuscan landscape and you have a two hour movie escape. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/08/22 Full Review alex S If you're watching in a dubbed version in another language, for the first time in the history of cinema it is probably an advantage. That way you are avoiding the language as spoken by the actors and filmed by the Director, god only knows what possessed him to think that this was a good idea. The end result is a film where nobody is speaking in their native tongue and boy does it show, and more importantly sound! I reached for the remote control to try to put on the hard-of-hearing subtitles as so much of the dialogue was escaping me. I have no idea if any of the actors were any good as they didn't seem to understand the dialogue they were speaking, with wrong intonation much more predominant than right or pleasant intonation on the ear. Presumably the thinking was, with an internationally renowned artist as the subject of the biopic, it would make sense to have all of the cast speaking the international language of English, except that all of the cast are non-native English speakers and representing a supposed Italian milieu, with a Spanish singing-teacher in the shape of usually bankable asset Antonio Banderas - usually a man who can be relied upon to mangle spoken English, even if he can get around it in a Hollywood blockbuster playing an American. It would be fine to suspend your disbelief with an Italian family speaking English, if only you could understand the Italian and Spanish actors playing that family. And it was just the same at school, hospital, and university as the protagonist goes out into the world... the only respite coming when he ends up singing in a bar and finally, FINALLY! we get to hear Italian being sung as is de rigueur in the land of opera and our ears are given a rest! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/21/21 Full Review Audience Member As a fan of Bocelli I actually enjoyed it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved it. Good acting. Inspiring story. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Excellent cast & story-telling and glorious music. Totally enjoyable. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member The movie makes Andrea Bocelli a more fleshed out, three-dimensional person. I was both surprised and astonished to learn of his life before he became famous. I "discovered" Andrea Bocelli while eating dinner in a B&B in Vermont - his voice drifted in over our dinner, totally captivating my attention. I felt impassioned & elevated by it and wasted no time finding out whose voice we were enjoying. Andrea Bocelli made our evening vividly memorable. That I was so taken by his voice that evening is all the more surprising, because I don't particularly like opera. But there's no denying the fullness, power, and magnetism of Mr. Bocelli's voice, no matter what he's singing. The movie fascinated me. Why it isn't getting a lot of great reviews is mysterious & puzzling and, in my opinion, quite unfair. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
