Fernando Trueba El Pais (Spain) The National Shotgun is probably Luis García Berlanga's most ruthless movie. A direct and savage film that makes no concessions. [Full Review in Spanish] Aug 1, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Joan P R This is one of the (few) true classics of Spanish cinema of the 1970s, it offers a satire of the moral corruption at the heart of Franco's regime in its last phases. It is remarkable for its time, including the effective use of Catalan/Castilian bilingualism. It can also be seen as an example of Spanish esperpento, in which the grotesque (including some scatological humor) helps offer a more deeply realistic portrait than a moderate form of realism could ever hope to achieve. It is generally well cast with the exception of the lead character, Jaume Canivell, who simply lacks any of the authentic mannerisms of the Catalan industrialists of the period he seeks to portray.
