Sophia, a 40-year-old philosophy professor, has been in a stable and conventional marriage to Xavier for a decade. From gallery openings to endless dinner parties, ten years have flown by. When Sophia meets Sylvain, a craftsman renovating the couple's new country house, Sophia's world is turned upside down. The two begin a passionate affair fueled by their irresistible physical connection. However, Sophia comes from a wealthy family of intellectuals, while Sylvain comes from a working-class family of manual workers. As they get to know each other on a deeper level, Sophia begins to question her own values after abandoning herself to her great romantic impulses. Director Monia Chokri delivers a smart and sexy romantic comedy, infusing it with spiky energy and fresh perspective, upending genre and gender conventions.

Christian Zilko indieWire Monia Chokri‘s brilliant feature is one of the sharpest cinematic examinations of the paradoxical expectations we place on our relationships in the 21st century. Rated: A- Jul 8, 2024 Full Review Peyton Robinson RogerEbert.com Steamy affairs and love triangles are not a recent cinematic invention ... but Chokri takes the familiar subject matter and crafts it with the whimsy of old and the depth of new. Rated: 4/4 Jul 7, 2024 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) A film that’s somehow sensitively enough directed by Chokri to make this extramarital relationship fizz and crackle beyond the usual smutty clichés. Rated: C Aug 5, 2024 Full Review Brittany Patrice Witherspoon Pop Culture Reviews The Nature of Love is bold, charming, and funny in how it captures complacency in relationships and what happens when a woman craves more adventure and passion. Achille C The story is intriguing and captures the viewer's attention. It highlights well the problems of a new relationship based solely on physical attraction. I liked it a lot. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/24/24 Full Review Rory M Electric chemistry. Fair and realistic take on the 'nature of love'. Circumstance, attraction and compatibility all have their parts to play. Chokri's lusciously filmed feature shows some of these factors can sustain bonds long or short, intimate or distanced. Driven home by compelling lead performances, you are left wondering whether we need them all to keep the candle burning Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/19/24 Full Review Read all reviews
