What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Neon Demon is seductively stylish, but Nicolas Winding Refn's assured eye can't quite compensate for an underdeveloped plot and thinly written characters.

This film is gorgeous, and the message it conveys is something that women can all understand and relate to, regardless if you’re a model or not. It’s a deep dive on beauty standards and the predatory nature of society towards women... Go to Full Review

The audience may have built their hopes in the beginning, but their stoic patience is never rewarded – if anything, Refn throws at them one crazy scene after another, never sparing them any of his nonsense. Go to Full Review

This is a world that is anything but subtle, and to approach this material in any other way would have defeated the purpose. Go to Full Review

Kitty B @Jalapeno-rex 1d Its as if the director thinks, let's do the whole film super slow with plenty of fancy lighting, sex and gore and it will rival David Lynch or some other better director. It is annoying because of the slow pace. It has bits and pieces that are good but it meanders along not really sure of what it is or where it's going. Elle Fanning does as good a job as she can with the material she was given. This film could have been SO much better if it wasn't so preoccupied and indulgent with the visual spectacle which in my humble opinion didn't do much but drag the film's pacing well past annoying. I appreciated the exposure of just how degrading, vicious and predatory the modelling world is. The necrophilia scene was as disturbing as it was utterly unnecessary and salacious. Just blatant degradation of women and the actress who played the role. So, making a film about how the modelling industry degrades and humiliates women WHILE degrading and humiliating them is a bit rich! See more JOANNE S Nov 29 A very art noir look at the crazy attitudes of women trying to make it modelling or Hollywood, persae. Felt like the writer pulled from movies like The Heather's, single white female, Bates Motel. All in all harmless and interesting. See more Donna M @DonnaM Nov 28 Don't waste your time. An absurd script. Slow, stupid and dull. There are no words to adequately describe this monstrosity, and most certainly not worth my time. Proceed at your own risk....you won't ever get that wasted time back. See more Haley S Oct 17 This was a huge waste of time. It was shockingly bad. The critics who thought it was genius, must have been high, VERY high. I fast forwarded often bc it was so sloooow, and I hated the "look" of the film. Reminded me of a movie made in the 40's on very old film. Dialogue was minimal, action non-existent, as was a plot or point. But, quite glad to see Elle Fanning's acting skills have improved greatly since this was made. It isn't engaging in the least, and no one in the film made me care about them or what happens to them. I didn't like or dislike any of the characters. It reminded me of something an adolescent boy who wanted to go into filmmaking someday, would have made. If he wasn't very talented or intelligent. It really seemed so dated, and poorly made. It wasn't artistic, it was just a waste of time. The movie's only redeeming quality was, you get to see a lot of pretty blondes naked women tho. See more Kai H Jul 29 Last third of the movie is not worth it. See more acsdoug D @acsdoug Jul 11 Ponderous. Slow. Uninteresting. Neither the twist at the end nor the presence of beautiful naked women could redeem it. See more Read all reviews
