Nelson M A powerful slow burner of a film. This one deserves repeat viewings. It also is helped tremendously by the extra footage in the Criterion extended edition. Malick crafts beautiful films, and this is one that doesn't seem to get the same recognition as others in his oeuvre. Great performances from all the leads, sublime soundtrack & sound design, and a wonderfully realized world thanks to phenomenal set design and cinematography. My one criticism: Despite the long runtime, the ending — even in the extended version — feels a bit abrupt, that it doesn't quite properly give closure to the character of Pocahontas. Seen another way, however, the suddenness of the ending properly captures the unpredictability, transience, and tenuousness of life. Watch this film, preferably in a dark room with a good sound system. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/07/23 Full Review Read all reviews
