Leslie Felperin Guardian The fact that the film, even in this elliptical, mangled version, still manages to be a rich meditation on family life, the legacy of violence and lost love makes it essential viewing. Audience Member Not being familiar with the contemporary history of Iran, any symbolism is probably lost on me. And of course, this is a highly truncated/censored film, despite the restoration. But to be honest, I found it dull. Given the limitations they must've worked under, the rawness of the shots and performances is understandable. But I really have to wonder what critics see in dialogue that pretty much serves as philosophical arguments and lines that are completely devoid of subtlety. The only thing I liked was the absurdist humour found in the hospital where every single patient, regardless of social standing or political background, is an attempted suicide - although it begs the question, why does everyone in Iran try to off themselves in the same (and highly ineffective) way of taking pills?
