This one is special to Czech people because the original book of creepy poems is well known to everybody there because of the book being mandatory school reading - this particular story being from 1834 (so yeah, definitely not Babadook inspired ffs). I'd still choose the previous film, named by the stories book compilation, Kytice (Wild Flowers) released in in the year 2000. Compared to this, The Noonday Witch feels like a bit of a lackluster add-on.

More about grief that drives one insane than a scary movie. I found the arc of the relationship between daughter and mother evocative by the end, but overall, the movie still felt a little thin.

Mother and daughter move to a quiet village to start a new life but soon their peace is disturbed by feelings of loss and grief. The haunting serves as a metaphor for mental illness, a formula we have all seen before in other psychological thrillers. A clear homage to the superior "The Babadook".

Beautiful to look and a great child actress performance aside, the Noonday Witch seems to strive for mythic but never quite gets there, and it's rarely as scary as it needs to be.
