Few Americans will ever find themselves in Russia. Seeing a three-dimensional performance straight from Russia's cultural capital in your own city or town is certainly the next-best thing.

I first saw this in the summer of 2008, in Vienna, when it was playing at an outdoor festival in front of the Rathaus. I was thrilled to find out when I returned home to Chicago, that I could purchase a DVD of it. I watch it every Christmas, and share it with friends and family in my home and on line. It IS the best Nutcracker presentation I've ever seen!! So artistic and entertaining.

I love Russia, the Russian ballet, the language. the culture... but I am not a fan of this Nutcracker. Having performed in 17 Nutcrackers and having seem many different versions-this is by far my least favorite. The costuming and story alone I find odd and confusing. The dancing beautiful- you can't expect anything less from the Mariinsky. But I simply am not a fan of the the way they tell this beloved story.
