David Stratton The Australian Even if elements of The Ornithologist are a bit baffling, it's still a visual treat and it's certainly never boring. Rated: 4/5 Nov 3, 2017 Full Review Simran Hans Observer (UK) The steel-stomached will find there's fun to be had with the film's investment in the spectacle of bodies (variously gory or sexy), and Fernando's increasingly surreal misadventures, which dance violently between the sacred and the profane. Rated: 4/5 Oct 8, 2017 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) Audacious, intriguing and also strangely sweet. Rated: 3/5 Oct 5, 2017 Full Review Dustin Chang ScreenAnarchy The increasing absurdity, punctuated by beautiful images of nature, this leisurely paced film is an intoxicating mix of madcap imagination and sensory cinematic experience that is truly hard to forget. Jul 17, 2020 Full Review David Lamble Bay Area Reporter The latest extraordinary visual and sensual trip from openly queer Portuguese director Joao Pedro Rodrigues. Jun 5, 2020 Full Review Steven Prokopy Third Coast Review Rodrigues's work frequently feels like experimental art rather than traditional narrative filmmaking, but The Ornithologist is a hypnotic and captivating bit of both. MovieZorg M There is an unnatural strangeness under all the scenes. It seems designed to puzzle the viewer. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/27/23 Full Review Apollo M This film made me rethink my career choices. Otherwise, an interesting take between religion and surrealism with somewhat queer insight that seems unattached. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/08/22 Full Review Audience Member A strange film about a guy in a jungle (an ornithologist) who gets tied down by some Asian women, then escapes and meets some deaf dumb local stud and they proceed to some really, really explicit nude gay rolling around, which is by far the most interesting aspect of this movie. If you're interested in that definitely worth watching, otherwise what on earth is this? This isn't really a spoiler since I didn't catch any type of plot to spoil. Apparently the producers were not that interested in the bird watching aspect since I was hoping for some more impressive Brazilian jungle birds, given the movie's title. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review raphael g I love slow-burn films. Full of beautiful cinematography, an atmospheric soundtrack, and a contemplative story. This movie has all that. And it started beautifully. But as it went on, I kind of lost interest. The story just wasn't developed enough in my opinion. I wasn't sucked into the atmosphere as I thought I was going to be at first. I ended up not being able to finish it. I know, I hate to not finish movies, but such was my disappointment with this one, that I didn't bother seeing the last 10 minutes or so. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Some fella is drifting in the wild on the lookout for birds. He gets hurt but luckily he's rescued by some Chinese tourists. They drug him, bound him up in ropes and keeps him as a prisoner. Well, he escapes but there's plenty of more weird stuff that awaits him. Weird and original flick that's has some substance but still seem very open and has that meditative feel. I could analyze it to bits, but I just went with it, not taking it too seriously and not hoping for too much sense or answers. For me that's the only way to see this film. It's not a masterpiece, far from it. It looks great with it's nature shots and it has some pretty sweet scenes, often accompanied with some sweet experimental music. It also has more boring moments making it easy to slip away from it. Cool acting and some freaky moments. Like the topless ladies on horses blowing horns and the fella drinking milk straight from the goat. I found it more interesting than solid, more free than freaky, but still something fresh and unique. 6 out of 10 storks. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Bizarre film that has its main character experiencing events similar to those experienced by Saint Anthony in the 13th century.
