Christopher S The joy of early 70's films is its thirst for realism. Tamped down acting, regular looking actors, everyday settings. You have to wonder how today's movie scene would handle Duvall. He is not sexy, overmuscled, accented, or goofy. Yet, in this time period, he can be cast as a hero taking down a crime boss. Even the way he holds his gun is something modern directors would never dream of-- you know, the proper way, close to his body and up so he can protect it and aim well. This simple gesture is indicative of the entire movie. On the surface it is a trope-- a guy getting revenge for his brother's murder, enlisting an old criminal buddy to take on the mob. However, it is treated in a way that is relatable, using cunning, audacity, and bravery to get the best of his enemies. Contrast this with today's super-human stunts, bad guys who can shoot straight, and cringe one liners, and you will see why I appreciate this film so much. A film noir at its best. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The funniest Robert Duvall movie, LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
