      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The People vs. Fritz Bauer draws on real-life events to fuel a propulsive post-WWII thriller whose tension rarely flags despite the story's well-known outcome.

Aender S This film takes its liberties from the real story around Fritz Bauer, even adding characters who didn't exist in real life, but still worth a watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/12/24 Full Review Simon R Fascinating insight into German thinking after WWII. Both leading actors were superb in difficult roles. I'll no doubt want to experience again in a few years. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/10/22 Full Review Audience Member Nice drama. I recommend to people who are interested in prosecution of Nazis in post WW2 Germany. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member A must-see for anyone who wants to know more about realpolitik. Excellent production in every way. Available on Netflix. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member This is an important movie! Having lived in Frankfurt, West Germany from 1963 to 1965 while my husband served in the 3rd Armored Division, it was pretty obvious that the Nazi's has just changed their uniforms for business suits. What I didn't know until the advent of the internet, was that the Frankfurt police force was manned by the same German soldiers who murdered our family in Stolin, Belarus. The Germans really got away with murder.. Thank you Fritz Bauer. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Alexandra Heller-Nicholas The Blue Lenses The result may not be highbrow experimental art cinema, but ... its explicit mission to tell Bauer's story to as many people as it can shouldn't be underrated in the current global political climate. Aug 25, 2018 Full Review Kate Taylor Globe and Mail A more-or-less successful thriller that can rely for tension on the shadowy setting of a society trying to hide from itself. Rated: 2.5/4 Oct 21, 2016 Full Review Peter Keough Boston Globe Klaussner's powerful performance as Bauer ... snaps the picture back into focus. Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 8, 2016 Full Review Joanne Laurier World Socialist Web Site Despite a few rough edges, Kraume's film is driven by a powerful commitment-and extraordinary lead actors-to dramatize Fritz Bauer's historic contribution. Feb 26, 2021 Full Review Heidy Morales Hye's Musings The screenplay by Kraume and Olivier Guez create a story that, although slow-moving, is gripping. The cinematography adds a visual layer that adds to the mood of the film. Rated: 3/5 Feb 21, 2021 Full Review David Lamble Bay Area Reporter Fritz Bauer is an engrossing full-submersion baptism into the best and worst of what it meant to be German in the awful middle years of the 20th Century.
