In Victorian England, when scientific discovery is all the rage, four wealthy gentlemen led by the redoubtable Samuel Pickwick (James Hayter) set forth on an objective study of human behavior. The club's efforts are repeatedly thwarted by genteel con artist Mr. Jingle (Nigel Patrick) and his faithful manservant, Sam (Harry Fowler). The widow Mrs. Bardell (Hermione Baddeley) also gets involved when one of Mr. Jingle's schemes gets Pickwick put on trial for breaking a promise to marry her.

John B @ifyncm Jan 5 This is the best film version. It is flawed in parts, but so is the the text. Many of the cast learned their comedy in music hall and vaudeville. A few were the same generation as Chaplin, so they also were Victorian. They really understood that Pickwick Papers is all caricatures, not characters. This is what they grew up with and perfected for years on the road, before they got into film. It's old fashioned music hall buffoonery, and they deliver. I do enjoy watching John Hayter and here he is perfect as the somewhat overweight, pompous, ruddy faced Englishman.
