Synopsis
This three-reel adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's horror piece The Pit and the Pendulum was produced by the Solax corporation, though curiously, the talented owners of that particular enterprise, Herbert and Alice Guy-Blaché, were not directly involved in the film's production. Elaborating a bit on the Poe original, the plot involves a treacherous monk named Pedro, who decides to get even with his hated rival Alonzo. Accusing Alonzo and his sweetheart of theft and sorcery, Pedro condemns them both to death by torture. It isn't clear what Pedro has in mind for the girl, but Pedro is strapped to a table and threatened with a huge, swinging bladed pendulum. Tension mounts as the pendulum grows ever nearer to the helpless Pedro, but salvation is at hand in the form of his sweetheart, who has escaped her captors and summoned the Spanish army to come to the hero's rescue.
