The Plough is a constellation. It is also a puppet theatre. This is the story of a family of puppeteers: siblings Louis, Martha and Lena; their father, who directs the troupe; and the grandmother, who makes the dolls. Together, they are a company and put on puppet shows. One day, following a performance, the father dies of a stroke, leaving his children alone.

Garrel is certainly well positioned to provide a crepuscular lament for the passing of old traditions, but “The Plough” is a disappointingly nichey, self-indulgent form for it to have taken. Go to Full Review

Those uncannily convincing performances, the result of months of rehearsal and other invisible labors, generate a low-key tension juxtaposed against the larger artifices containing them. Go to Full Review
