In the wake of her husband's devastating accident, a devoted wife becomes consumed by a mysterious portrait that resembles him in his happier days. Akin to lots of the very best ghost stories then, events move slowly, always casting doubt on what is happening, hinting at the contextual problems at play here: families; family legacies; the toxic effects of privilege; the lives of women.

There is an effort here to do something new with this type of heroine, and to give her fresh agency, whilst exploring something of what it is that intrigues many women about the monstrous men in the Gothic.

After an accident that left her husband damaged, a woman moves to a lavish mansion in order to heal from the traumatic event. She finds in the attic a painting of a man incredibly similar to her husband, triggering in her a growing and sinister obsession. The woman starts experiencing horrifying and hallucinatory visions that seem to be a manifestation of her deep grief. "The Portrait" is a slow-burn gothic tale exploring the concept of haunting paintings and the horrors that lie inside it. Despite the competent performances, the movie suffers from an incoherent narrative.

I'm not a fan of ghost stories but this film is not the usual tropes. A bit of a slow burn but it is creepy enough to keep you engaged.

A psychological thriller grappling over guilt is advantageously an absorbing meditation with a bolstering presence, while hinges the convoluting supernatural injection that validates its tonally atmospheric incoherency to possibly suggest coping mechanism with sporadic chills to boot. (B-)

For me personally this movie is quite nice but poor story telling on how the potrait of calvin is alive and literally haunted alex. For me this movie could have more plot twist than only flat climax from the beginning till the end.
