Petros T "Al-hadiya" is a competently made short that starts off in deceptively calm fashion and proceeds to become progressively more intense, culminating in the powerful climax. The acting - both by the dad and the kid - is good, and thankfully the resolution isn't reached by going down the easy route of tragedy: the film opts instead for a conclusion that is simple without being simplistic and somehow contains both indignation and hope without being unnecessarily devastating or unbearably optimistic. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/13/24 Full Review David P A short movie, well directed and acted, that explores the relationship between a father and daughter in a Palestinian enclave in the Holy Land, via the frustrating time negotiating Israeli army checkpoints. I also felt that the soldiers might also face frustrations in enforcing the occupation. Both sides try to keep their own emotional issues in check but do not always succeed. The film shows tensions which were conveyed to me as a member of an audience. The movie reminded me that sadly and unfortunately the current problems in Israel & Palestine have been going on since 1948-49 but no hope was offered. Yet it is worth watching to obtain some insight and perhaps encourage further study. Unsurprisingly it won the BAFTA for best short film in 2021, and it has won or been nominated for other awards. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/12/23 Full Review yash b I am always amazed by the art of creating an effective short film. In just a little over 20 minutes, "The Present" showed me a convincing glimpse into these characters' hardship and lives. A friend of mine brought to my attention that this short film was available on Netflix as well as nominated for an Oscar and I am glad I checked it out. It is a movie that made me care about these characters with minimal exposition, and that is an impressive feat. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
