Critics Consensus

A muddled story populated with thinly written characters and arranged around a misguided Johnny Depp performance, The Professor fails early and often.

Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times Depp, sporting a distractingly foppish, unfurling-flag hairdo, commits to his character's tricky balancing act but over-relies on his signature rakishness to fully convince. Jun 25, 2019 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times Poof! No doubt this movie will disappear quickly before our very eyes. Rated: 1.5/4 May 17, 2019 Full Review Nick Allen RogerEbert.com [The Professor] is more subservient to feel-good cliches than its too-cool-for-school veneer indicates. Rated: 2/4 May 17, 2019 Full Review Jamie Healy Radio Times It's American Beauty meets Dead Poets Society given a terminal-disease twist, and while not as scathing nor as inspirational as those films, The Professor happily mines laughs from the darkest of places. Rated: 3/5 Jun 17, 2019 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue Johnny Depp finds some emotional depth amid the eccentricities, but this muddled character study about a dying man's final days can't match his efforts. Jun 7, 2019 Full Review Ron Wilkinson It's Just Movies An off-season ditty for Johnny Depp, this short story of a short life gives Depp the time to do a short performance. Kari W Excellent story of a person dealing with a cancer diagnosis. Dark, yet I could feel his emotional pain, and trying to live life up to the end. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/23/24 Full Review Michael L Interesting story, some good acting, a few good scenes, but all in a little thin on its legs. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/03/24 Full Review lil’till69 Contrary to what others may think, I believe that this film shows, through the eyes of a dying man, how hard it is like to tell the the people closest to you what your truly feeling and how even through the hardest of times you do paint on a smile to make others happy. Although the film wasn't near perfect. Depp's over-reliance on his classic, suave, audacious character that were all used to and its very cliche end causes a good plot to go belly up. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/10/24 Full Review Rob C I enjoyed this movie. It's not often a movie can make me laugh and cry. Part of the reason is what has happened in my own life. Notice how the critics rated it so low but the audience rated it much higher. That just shows how out of touch and pretentious they are. Don't listen to them. You're better than that. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review Kyle J I could only stand to watch it for 28 minutes. I FF'd it to watch a few more scenes and none were any better.
