kevin w During WW2 a woman of culture (Deborah Kerr) visiting the grave of her husband in the South Pacific begins a romance with a course Marine (William Holden). What makes this worth watching and gives the story oomph is the setting, Guadalcanal, and life on the island in preparation for the big push against the Japanese. The focus is on the Red Cross nurses who cared for the men, and there's not many movies on that subject. Beloved character actress Thelma Ritter as the head nurse has a big part here, ever thankfully. The final resolution is easy and weak but that's still not a reason to miss this otherwise standard diaper with wartime flair.
