Mary (Niamh McGirr), age 11, is an unrepentant tomboy who dreams of someday leaving her rural Northern Ireland town behind in a blaze of car-racing glory. But first she must win the upcoming go-kart championship. This is no easy task, since she faces constant bullying from the boys at school, her mother (Susan Lynch) demands she quit and her father (Colm Meaney) ignores her pleas for help. But the willful girl forges ahead, devotedly building her own vehicle in time for race day.
