The subject matter is harrowing enough without extra strings. Go to Full Review

Very much of the Me Too moment, this uneven but important documentary exists to give a voice to the voiceless, in this case the "staggering" number of black women raped by white men throughout US history. Go to Full Review

A prescient and important film about the civil rights movement and one woman's fight for justice, which is told honestly and respectfully. Go to Full Review

“The Rape of Recy Taylor” is not an easy film to watch, but it brings Taylor to life in a way that shows her as a complete person in contrast to true crime, which sensationalizes the situation and creates the pleasure of tabloid. Go to Full Review

06/11/2019 Recy Taylor deserves better. This meandering, unfocused mess of a film seems like a white supremacist telling of the story, right down to the protection of the perpetrators. The documentarian never shows us their faces as though she's protecting them all these years later. This was the wrong person to make this film. Please someone do this the right way, for Recy Taylor's sake. See more dave d 06/06/2019 Part Civil Rights story, and part a voice for all the woman who have been sexually assaulted and not believed or taken seriously, 'The Rape of Recy Taylor' is a tribute to the title character and many many many women (and a few men) who needed to have their voices heard when it mattered. Interwoven with tidbits on other civil rights leaders, the film doesn't dive into the Recy Taylor story as much as it could and that takes away from the power of the film albeit just a touch. Documentarian Nancy Buirski put forth an important film, but one that couldn't always stay on track. A tough and necessary watch. We need to respect all people and this should never be debated. Final Score: 7.1/10 See more 03/21/2019 Great documentary!!! So glad Ms. Taylor was able to speak about the incident before her death!!!! I also hate that the “scholar” who spoke in the film pronounced Ms. Taylor’s first name wrong several times!!! I don’t understand why the filmmakers or editors didn’t catch that at all!!! See more 07/03/2018 Poignant. Gives detailed insight into not only the horrible rape (and coverup) of Ms Taylor, but the degradation of the black woman in America. This film stirred quite a bit of emotion in me; I didn't know whether to cry, be angry, or happy that she survived. The one emotion that was clear was pride for Ms Taylor, who dared to speak up, any woman who dares to speak out against such violent acts. See more Read all reviews
