Based on the novel by Stendhal, this period drama follows the young and ambitious Julien Sorel (Gérard Philipe) as he attempts to rise above his lower-class background. While highly motivated, Julian is limited in his understanding of high society and the world in general, leading to a number of unfortunate situations for the naïve upstart, particularly his ill-fated love affair with the wife (Danielle Darrieux) of aristocrat Monsieur de Rênal (Jean Martinelli).

Audience Member This movie suffers similar faults that the 1997 version has. It makes me wonder about the reading comprehension skills and ability to write decent screenplays of Hollywood. All subtleties in Stendhal's romantic novel about a young man whose affections for a woman seemingly beyond his reach becoming amplified by his intense, out of control, innate desires, are sanded down in the movie version. The novel is much more than novel just about romance, what it says about the relationship between a woman and man are profound on their own, but it also has many insights on society as a whole. None of that is reflected in the movie and it is interchangeable with any other Hollywood movie of the same ilk, just change the sets and costumes. I'm sorry, I don't think there is a "French film industry", in spite of Cannes, this movie is a Hollywood movie. So synopsizing, read either the book or watch the movie, not both, and don't expect much from the movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Joli film avec beaucoup de couleurs. Dommage.... Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews
