Critics Consensus

Blake Lively delivers an impressive lead performance, but The Rhythm Section plods predictably through a story that could have used some flashier riffs.

Wenlei Ma News.com.au When it comes to action movies, absurd, suspend-your-disbelief twists can be forgiven if the movie was exciting and propulsive. But what can't be forgiven is dullness. May 29, 2024 Full Review Manuel São Bento MSB Reviews The editing is weirdly unconventional, drawing out scenes for extra seconds or even minutes where absolutely nothing happens and intercutting dialogue sequences with unnecessary flashbacks or flashforwards. Jaden McGrath Although having good intentions with an attempt of feeling artsy and edgy, The Rhythm Section stumbles over quite a few hurdles that keep it from being as good as it should be. Starting with the positives, the performances of Jude Law, Sterling K. Brown, and especially Blake Lively were actually pretty good and convincing. I can also say that while the writing wasnt always top notch, the dialogue was actually pretty good and the cinematography gave the film a claustrophobic feel that increased the intensity of the more tense scenes. Something that I can honestly appreciate. However, that unfortunately are where the positives end. The biggest issue with the film itself is Blake Livelys character of Stephanie Patrick who is a terrible assassin. In real life, she would be easily caught as she is careless, clumsy, sloppy, leaves finger prints everywhere, and very rarely actually does what she sets out to do. Another issue the film has its that a majority of the the movie feels like just filler to fill up the runtime. At least 60% of the movie is filler while the other 40% actually feels necessary for the plot, which is something a movie should never have. And finally, the writing outside of the dialogue is forced and at times irritating. But overall, meh is the perfect word to describe The Rhythm Section as it is not a film you need to rush out and see in theaters. Its a rental at best. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/20 Full Review James R Slow and seriously needed suspension of disbelief. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/19/20 Full Review Gregory I liked the story and the actress's acting. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/20 Full Review Nancy B Just couldn’t keep my interest, bland storytelling, music did not fit any of the scenes. Thought it would be way better from the trailer but just wait until it comes out in Redbox. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/20 Full Review joey No character development . Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/15/20 Full Review ch Minimal action scenes. Plot was too long. The movie was slow. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/14/20 Full Review Read all reviews
