dave d 'The River and the Wall' is a documentary that travels the entire border of Texas and Mexico. Five people take a journey by horse, kayak, and bike and in the process this multi-month adventure occurs. Along the way, the filmmaker and his companions share stories, mishaps and meet people who talk about the potential impact of building a wall. Tough questions are asked and several ideas are proposed and it's a good discussion that includes two Congressmen. However, it's hard to see the impact this could make. Where there's money, there's a will and where there's a will there's a way. It appears there's money for big business in putting up a barrier. Some fantastic images for a doc that just doesn't quite get there. Final Score: 6.2/10 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The scenery is fantastic and the group's choice and use of different vehicles (bike, foot, horse, canoe) is really fun to watch. The wildlife is absolutely breathtaking and the drone shots overhead add good visual perspective. But the anti-wall propaganda is a little bit over the top. We learn about what a wall in this part of the world would really mean and how it would appear. But every obstacle is presented as insurmountable. And they want the 99% of us who do not live on the border to think it's impossible because we don't understand. You can build a wall with vertical slats that make it harder to climb. You can follow property lines instead of cutting farms in half. You can leave openings for wildlife to migrate through. But each of these challenges is just said to be wrong and unsolvable by the filmmakers. It just feels a little one-sided. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Wonderful documentary. I loved seeing the wildlife, the birds, the river, and the landscape. Also, it was refreshing to hear about the real human stories and dynamics along the river instead of the same old stupid Fox News foolishness. We have a lot to learn about the border region if we would open our ears and eyes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Should be seen by anyone that wants to have an educated opinion on building the wall. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/22/19 Full Review Audience Member Amazing bi-partisan view of the unintended consequences of a border wall. Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times This casually relaxed documentary is both a vivid message movie and a wonder-filled paean to a singularly beautiful and biodiverse environment. May 9, 2019 Full Review Marc Savlov Austin Chronicle By the end of this epic and thoughtful expedition, you're left with the unmistakable feeling that some things should and indeed must remain unsullied by cheap Washington grandstanding and election year promises. Rated: 4/5 May 2, 2019 Full Review Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times Director Ben Masters' compelling, gorgeously shot, super-timely documentary "The River and the Wall" should be required viewing of anyone charged with making a public case for or against a border wall between the United States and Mexico. Rated: 3/5 Oct 8, 2020 Full Review Andrew Parker The Gate It's a unique documentary that's both reverential and sobering at the same time. Here's hoping it doesn't turn out to be a time capsule.
