What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Sadness lives up to its title with an unstintingly grim -- and overall effective -- slice of dystopian horror.

Phuong Le Guardian The assured command of style situates Jabbaz as an impressive new voice in horror cinema. Rated: 3/5 May 17, 2022 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com The Sadness is one of the more aggressively bleak, disturbing, and depraved horror films I’ve ever seen. Rated: 2.5/4 May 15, 2022 Full Review Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com Jabbaz’s movie isn’t exactly deep, but it does effectively channel his free-floating anxieties in ways both excessive and appropriately nasty. Rated: 3/4 May 12, 2022 Full Review David Day Horror Movie Talk It takes the old premise of zombies and the morality tales that they brought to the silver screen and pops a monster truck engine under the hood before sending you to hell with tears streaming from your eyes. Rated: 8/10 Sep 23, 2025 Full Review Brian Orndorf Blu-ray.com "The Sadness" is an exercise in extremity, and while the helmer has all the gore and ugliness imaginable, he neglects to create a pace to the endeavor, which never feels alive as it drags from one makeup effects display to the next. Rated: C Mar 24, 2025 Full Review Mike Thorn In Review Online Jabbaz’s primary focus is on cartoonishly gory entertainment. The director approaches scenes of carnage with glee... Sean C Another well made horror from Asia, effects are done well as the story line is. The old lady in the restaurant is a yuk moment and ignites the gore . Well worth a look. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/20/25 Full Review Zachary D This film has officially taken the crown from the Human Centipede franchise as the most disgusting movie I’ve ever seen. I doubt anyone could sit through it without turning away at least once—but in that sense, it absolutely achieves its goal. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/13/25 Full Review Tyler H This film excels in two key areas: the acting, particularly from the leads and the infected, and the depiction of the zombies themselves. Beyond that, though, it's really just another generic zombie movie. The "shock moments" sprinkled throughout don't add to the story; they exist purely for shock value rather than genuine scares, and The Sadness leans on this far too often. The plot is basic, offers nothing new to the genre, and ultimately left me feeling it wasn't worth the watch. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/06/25 Full Review Michael B Wow!! This is one SICK & SCARY Movie!! It's was GREAT!!! Definitely.. not one for youngsters to watch. Grown-ups only! 👍👍👍👍👍 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/11/25 Full Review Kevin V Si buscas género gore y que te dé escalofríos, está es perfecta Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/07/25 Full Review Zeth D Great from beginning to end. Absolutely vile and brutal in the most disturbing ways. This movie pushes that envelope in all the right ways and leaves the view scared and questioning how much our fellow societal members are capable of when empathy, hope, and compassion are no longer controlled. I believe that there's a comic called crossed that this movie may have taken inspiration from. Might check it out. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/24/25 Full Review Read all reviews
