Qamar Shafiq Geeks of Color For a tv horror flick, The Sandman is better than most and worth a watch, if even just for Shae Smolik's performance as a vulnerable yet cold and disturbed young girl as she shows great signs for a bright career ahead of her. Steve B Awful, just awful. Run while you can... Cause once you start, it sucks you in, especially if you can fast-forward. I guess I kept watching just to see how bad it can get. I'm writing this so you don't. Call it my good deed for the day. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/24 Full Review Audience Member I was only vaguely familiar with the graphic novels, so I didn't have any biases about how the characters were portrayed. Compelling from beginning to end, I binge watched from start to finished and found the story very satisfying. I eagerly await a second season. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review robert p I can't believe the ratings on this movie, I thought the girl was a very good actress who can go from one extreme to another i.e. being scared all the way to being brave and using her powers to help herself. I thought the Sandman was a little screwy with his dull gray/brown suit, but you can't let that stop giving good review!!! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The acting and horrible cgi remind me of a low-budget show on sci fi. Also akin to a tv show, we're just thrown into this story with zero buildup to the girl's powers. We're expected to accept her spooky sand powers from scene 1. And once our main character sees that her niece can rip a woman apart with floating evil sand, she doesn't seem the least bit shocked. If the characters don't care, why should we? Not the least bit scary. Just stupid and boring. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member Terrible writing, subpar acting (though given the writing and story, it is hard to fault them too much), predictable scares, mediocre production values, and a story that fits in the 80's b-rated scary movie genre without the nostalgia. I literally found myself signing not but two minutes into the movie as already characters were doing dumb things for no logical reason and spouting unrealistic lines. This is the kind of movie that you watch when you are getting drunk with friends and want to make fun of lame characters doing dumb things. You'll end up throwing Cheetos at the television. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Wow, it's like someone watched Firestarter and then read Door to December and thought, "I can make this into utter crap!" First off there was no way that child was 8 years old. She was at least 10. That kind of thing annoys me. Child development is very different between those ages and that affects the story. If you are going to write children know what you are writing. As for the monster, if it comes out every time she gets scared I'm surprised her father lasted as long as he did. I mean, he didn't do anything to threaten her so I'm a bit confused as to why it killed him anyway. Unless it happens every time she's scared and just kills whoever in which case you'd think it would have killed him a long time ago as I'm sure that entire trip scared the crap out of her. The aunt dreaming about giving birth to the girl made no sense and was made even more confusing with the mid credit scene of Madison calling her "Mom". The original dream made me think that maybe Claire actually was her mom but gave the girl to her brother to raise for whatever reason. That would have made the story a lot better, but considering it looked like her mother died giving birth to her according to the date of her death I guess that's not the case. Therefore it's REALLY cringy that the girl would call her "Mom". Also CPS is not going to take a child away for one bruise. They're very busy and have countless cases of actual abuse and false claims to sort through. Chances are that they'd be happy the kid had a relative to stay with that had a clean house and provided them food much less the obvious love and devotion Claire was happy to give. They would never fight to keep a kid from that. It's what they dream of every kid in their care actually having. I give it one star for being mildly entertaining enough to yell at the TV about how none of this made any sense. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews
