In the early 1960s, George Carroll walked out on his family, leaving his wife, Dorothy, and their four children behind. Decades later, the Carroll siblings are still left haunted by what happened to their father. Seeking much-needed closure for himself and his family, THE SECRETS WE BURY follows Mike Carroll as he unravels the mystery of his father's disappearance and uncovers a story much darker and more complex than his family could have imagined. Told through extensive sit-down interviews with the Carroll siblings and layered with intimate archival footage of the Carroll family spanning decades of their lives, the documentary offers a sensitive look into one family's journey to find closure. Part mystery and part family drama, THE SECRETS WE BURY raises important questions about whose stories we choose to believe, and why.

Tyler S @tylerking24 Dec 28 Just couldn't take my eyes off this one. Was so interested in everything going on. The story was absolutely fascinating but majorly complex. Crazy to think this stuff actually happened. See more Stephanie K @StephanieLorelei65 Dec 28 What a traumatic story as told by the Carroll children, now adults. Peeling back the layers of their Father’s disappearance takes you to places you didn’t think it would go. One thing is for sure, no family should go through this much pain. I grew up around the same time and so sad to think how different their childhood was from many. Applaud them for sharing their incredible hard and emotional journey. See more Karl O. @GalwayK Dec 22 I genuinely feel slightly less intelligent for having listened to Mike Carroll and his family. With lines like “ She had no income coming in” - as opposed to “income going out” - what? Another slightly interesting story told by less intelligent specimens and hard living ladies playing to the camera. Witness Mike - a legend in his own mind. Witness a woman who visited a Median (her word) to contact Daddy and Mommy and Fido on the other side. Your are being played girlfriend! Witness the continuing slide in content on HBO. This one is a snooze. It’s the documentary equivalent of listening to barroom bores. You can’t help feel all the younger lads visit the barber everytime the cameras are coming. Mikey has Mommy Issues. It’s almost worth watching for the son misting up over the moldy shoes at the end though. I had tears in my eyes. From laughter. I’m guessing not the directors intent. See more Avindu G Dec 21 Childhood; a known unknown to many. All the things that could have happened better but didn't. Regret and denial is the side of the coin we don't want to flip, while we cherish what we could. This story about the Carroll family expresses the social trauma of war. It explores a time where the connectivity and awareness wasn't adequate about the mental injuries that are equally as severe as the wounds of righteous wars. This story and the depiction of present proves the fact that societal change allow our kin to thrive and live better than we did. So all the secrets we unearthed and pains we bury is a sacrifice and a lesson for the generations to come. See more Married2ThePlot P. @marriedtotheplot Dec 19 The Secrets We Bury is devastating in the quietest, most human way. This documentary doesn’t just tell a tragic story—you feel it. The trauma, the grief, and the unanswered questions live in every face and every pause. Watching this family peel back layers of a mystery that will never truly be solved is both heartbreaking and unsettling. There’s a sense of closure, but it’s incomplete—because some truths remain just out of reach. That tension sits with you long after the credits roll. It’s a wild story, but not in a sensational way. It’s devastating, intimate, and deeply human. The kind of documentary that makes you question the moments you take for granted and leaves you aching for answers that may never come.
