Audience Member a beautiful tragic heart-breaking love story sprinkled with bits of comedy and even a twist! i like their time nurturing characters and super stunning super actress jo yeo-jeong!! : D she kills it again yet never overpowers her peers! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Perhaps hard to get if you don't have historical understanding of the class-system in Chosun dynasty nor background of the original "Choonhyung-Jun" story. Very fresh twist in the story and the perspective makes this a good movie, though it would have been excellent had some of the unnecessary erotic scenes not been there. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member interesting twist on the well-known story Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Everything goes well and interesting right up to somewhere in the middle where the relationship / plot goes huh ?! The beginning has the sexual humor and intrigue of period drama, but then they had to thicken the plot with so-called twists and political agendas. I get it, the story is about the true love from a servant but it would have been so much fun or cleaner doing the opposite, instead of that bitter aftertaste. It doesn't have to be oversmart and thought provoking. Oh well... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Impressive, well-made, intriguing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review noel b This film is a parody on the Korean 18th century literature classic love story of Chun-hyang, and so will appear different from the original. I had been alerted that the film, although an art house foreign film, contained sex scenes that were very explicit. While I saw scenes with some nudity and apparent intercourse, I did not think that the scenes rose to the level of explicit sex and actually I thought that they were tastefully done. We do get to see one breast, but that is about it for erogenous body parts. If the translators for the subtitles were accurate, the language used in the film hardly would rise to the level of politeness that would have been appropriate in 18th century Korea. The language more closely approximated what one would imagine would be used on the streets in the lower class neighborhoods of the world, except that I don't recall the F word or other curse words. To me, this was an entertaining and complex story of political appointment, political abuse of power, political and economic corruption, sexual discrimination and harassment, all in the wrapper of a love story of a man not entitled by his society to love. The themes of society in 18th century Korea turn out to be a pre-cursor for modern America, and probably most societies, in the 21st century. Classic literature purists probably are not going to be able to get past the concept that this film is a parody of the original classic, and so probably will be disenchanted by this film. All of the rest of us poor illiterates, our minds not contaminated by the original classic, get to enjoy a pretty good film, one both entertaining and instructive.
