What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Silence has nothing new to say with a derivative premise and placid pacing -- even a wasted Stanley Tucci is unable to elevate the stodgy material a decibel above dreadful.

Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald The estimable trio at the heart of the cast goes close to carrying the whole thing over the line, but it never feels as taut or kinetic as it needs to be. May 3, 2019 Full Review Scott Tobias New York Times There may come a time when the Netflix algorithm grows sophisticated enough to cut out the middle man and write its own scripts, but until that day arrives, niche-targeted dreck like "The Silence" will have to suffice. Apr 12, 2019 Full Review Kristy Puchko IGN Movies Imagine A Quiet Place, but deeply mediocre. Apr 11, 2019 Full Review Robert W. Butler Butler's Cinema Scene The Silence has been reasonably well made by director John R. Leonetti. And he has assembled a surprisingly classy cast. Rated: C+ Jul 11, 2024 Full Review Samantha Puc The Beat The cult plot in The Silence is as poorly handled as nearly every other part of the film. With the exception of a great cast, headed by Kiernan Shipka, Stanley Tucci, and Miranda Otto, the film lacks any cohesion and feels almost unwatchable. Jul 9, 2024 Full Review Jordy Sirkin Jordy Reviews It The Silence is a painful attempt to remake A Quiet Place, which came out the year before. Though this is based on a 2015 novel of the same name, the story has already been done perfectly, leaving little to be desired in this straight-to-streaming flick. Kat R One of the few movies that elicited an overwhelmingly negative response, and I'm only 30 minutes in. When we first meet Kiernan Shipka's character, we see that she's a constant target of bullying because she's... deaf? Maybe it's because I'm not an asshole or an idiot, but I don't know why being deaf would make you a target of bullying, which seemed perfectly acceptable to the majority of students. The second time I experienced a visceral reaction is when the main family is first terrorized by the monsters. It comes immediately after Stanley Tucci's friend Glenn's car flips over a hill and is trapped underneath. As the family flees to their car to seek help, their dog begins barking frantically. Instead of MAKING THE DOG STOP in any meaningful way - only saying "Shhh..." or yelling - they are mercilessly pelted by the little demon bats. Even as Glenn begins firing his gun to redirect the creatures' attention, they look around in amazement, like they're seeing snow during the summer in LA. Honestly, that was so fking unbelievable and very stupid, just hold the dog's mouth shut? Like wtf, really. they spent more time crying over the situation than trying to resolve the issue, i.e., get the dog to stfu long enough to flee and get help. Bad movie, very crap. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/22/25 Full Review Audience Member A lot similar to A quiet place, but I like it, not as much as that but was decent Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/21/25 Full Review Audience Member People are saying this idea was before A Quiet Place which might be true since it was based off a book, but it was still very mid. The creatures are like large bats who cannot see and only can hear. They can smell as they show them sniffing, but not very well as you will see lol. It's not scary at all like A Quiet Place. But the story is what was super dumb. Instead of staying inside the comfort of their own home where they would be safe with food and shelter, they decide to drive off and get stranded on the country side, fighting for their lives. Also, if they all know sign language, then why do they need to speak during times they need to be super quiet? Even in A Quiet Place they mouthed their words without making a sound. I'm also not a fan of Kiernan Shipka either so that didn't help. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/15/25 Full Review Audience Member Now I don't LOVE this movie, but it's dence. I am, however, sick of people saying it's a ripoff of A Quiet Place. This movie was in development way before, and I think if A Quiet Place didn't come out first it would have been more popular. Not to mention this is based on a book, too. It did make me actually upset at some parts, but the concept of these monsters is super cool. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/12/25 Full Review P C The life blood of this genre revolves around loud babies, dogs, and children. The plot doesn't seem to have a solid direction and the last 5 minutes of the movie attempts to sum up what the previous 85 failed to do. The cast is good, but the writing is lacking. If a movie is going to lean into the cult scene, it really needs to lean into it. This movie tries to be too many different things and fails at most. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/06/24 Full Review Read all reviews
