What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Silence has nothing new to say with a derivative premise and placid pacing -- even a wasted Stanley Tucci is unable to elevate the stodgy material a decibel above dreadful.

Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald The estimable trio at the heart of the cast goes close to carrying the whole thing over the line, but it never feels as taut or kinetic as it needs to be. May 3, 2019 Full Review Scott Tobias New York Times There may come a time when the Netflix algorithm grows sophisticated enough to cut out the middle man and write its own scripts, but until that day arrives, niche-targeted dreck like "The Silence" will have to suffice. Apr 12, 2019 Full Review Kristy Puchko IGN Movies Imagine A Quiet Place, but deeply mediocre. Apr 11, 2019 Full Review Robert W. Butler Butler's Cinema Scene The Silence has been reasonably well made by director John R. Leonetti. And he has assembled a surprisingly classy cast. Rated: C+ Jul 11, 2024 Full Review Samantha Puc The Beat The cult plot in The Silence is as poorly handled as nearly every other part of the film. With the exception of a great cast, headed by Kiernan Shipka, Stanley Tucci, and Miranda Otto, the film lacks any cohesion and feels almost unwatchable. Jul 9, 2024 Full Review Jordy Sirkin Jordy Reviews It The Silence is a painful attempt to remake A Quiet Place, which came out the year before. Though this is based on a 2015 novel of the same name, the story has already been done perfectly, leaving little to be desired in this straight-to-streaming flick. Ryan S I personally enjoyed the movie, thought it was solid and I really enjoyed the ending. Makes you think, if you got the time I’d watch! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/05/24 Full Review Millie R Really bad spin off. Everything was so mediocre. I don't recommend this one bit tbh. Also SUPER. Predictable Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/29/24 Full Review Vivianne N I loved this post apocalyptic movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/29/24 Full Review Audience Member This is a decent and serviceable addition to the "don't make a sound or you'll die" movie genre. I'm sure many viewers will immediately compare it to the A QUIET PLACE movies, but THE SILENCE is not a clone of the A QUIET PLACE movies. THE SILENCE movie is based on the novel THE SILENCE by Tim Lebbon, published in 2015, a couple of years before any of these movies were produced. So much for accusations of plagiarism, right? THE SILENCE is pretty grim and doesn't hold back on the dangers faced by the characters. For example, a young mother and her baby get forced off a stalled subway train full of silent passengers because the baby cries. The movie doesn't show the expected carnage and death, but one can see the monsters rounding the bend headed toward the sound of the baby's cries. There is blood, guts, cultists who have removed their tongues, and tons of toothy blind bat-like creatures who are extremely hungry and extremely fertile. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review Juan S The film is a poor attempt at a spin-off following the very well-received 2018 film, A Quiet Place. It finds itself in a ridiculously bad position between a parody and serious film. The casting of a hearing person in a deaf role would be less offensive if the performance and logical application of a deaf lifestyle were more accurate - unfortunately the justification that the character recently became deaf is a lazy excuse. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/30/24 Full Review Audience Member They left their house!?!? Why? The first decision is just one of annoying stupid ones.
