Audience Member Dorothy Page was literally brought in as a gimmick attempt to reboot the golden years of singing cowboys and unfortunately you get the sense that the studio already anticipated it not working. They gave her the blandest material, western lullaby music and hardly any action. Though it could also be that Grand National went out of business after making this picture too.... Hahahaha. JUST SAYIN'. Singing Cowgirl is way darker and manipulative than other singing cowboy movies I've seen. It's a thin plot about a guy in town trying to kill off a family because he thinks their land has gold on it and he wants to buy the farm. I was sort of shocked to see a scene in which a small boy gets to watch his parents slowly die. The music is morose too, there's one song she sings at the funeral for the boys parents - shot in silhouette next to graves - and then the next song is for young Billy as he's DYING in a doctor's office having been SHOT IN THE BACK (he survives, but still). Dorothy Page is really charming though, I loved her character and her style - like goddamn, a woman who can ride 'n' rope 'n' sing 'n' gets first billing! You also definitely buy Dave O'Brien's crush on her, and he's also pretty easy on the eyes. All in all, not a great movie but I'll be damned if I don't appreciate some aspects of it.
