Critics Consensus

Ray Winstone exudes tough-guy bravado, but this cop thriller otherwise feels thoroughly generic.

Pete Vonder Haar Village Voice [It] feels a lot like an American-made cop movie circa 1990. Mar 1, 2013 Full Review Joe Neumaier New York Daily News Based on a '70s British program, this is a bombastic effort that, while not successful, is still as bracing as a cold pint. Rated: 2/5 Mar 1, 2013 Full Review Tom Long Detroit News Maybe it worked in the '70s; it's too worn to work these days. Ray Winstone needs to find better rocks to chew on. Rated: C- Mar 1, 2013 Full Review Jason Best Movie Talk Love stages the action with a panache that belies the film's relatively modest budget and the big-set piece scenes... have an exhilarating energy and punch that British crime movies rarely deliver. Rated: 3/5 Dec 12, 2020 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Its slight and simplistic narrative can't escape feeling like an overlong episode from your pick of a plethora of past and current like-minded television series. Aug 7, 2019 Full Review Abbie Bernstein Assignment X The Sweeney as a film has a not-so-secret weapon in leading man Ray Winstone, who plays Jack Regan, head of the "Flying Squad." Rio C Watch some paint dry , cut your toe nails or count grains of rice that fill a cup Terrible movie Winston and Lewis usually good not in this No likeable characters, predictable plot when there was one. Most cop movies : shows miss the mark for procedure but this is ridiculous beyond words . Seriously find something else to do . Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/10/24 Full Review antonis k The awful dialogue, the uninteresting storyline and the bad execution of the script make 'Sweeney' a disappointing and boring crime action film. (4/10) Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review KEVIN S YOUR NICKED. AFTER THE NAME "THE SWEENEY" NOTHING RESEMBLES ANYTHING FROM THE 1970S TV SHOW. IF HAVEN'T SEEN THIS. DON'T. RAY WINSTONS WORST FILM EVER. SPORTED BY HIS GREAT GRANDSON. CARTER AND REEGAN THEY ARE NOT. WINSTONS REDICULOUS ACTING STARTS TO BECOME FUNNY IT'S SO BAD. THE FILM LOOKS LIKE IT WAS MADE ANYWHERE BUT LONDON. THE SCRIPT IS JUST AWFUL. THE ACTING SILLY. THE LOCATIONS ARE OTHER WORLDLY. DID NO. ONE CHIRP UP DURING THE MAKING OF THIS AND SAY "I THINK WE SHOULD CHANGE THE NAME" AS IT'S AN INSULT TO THE ORIGINAL. NO ONE IS GOING TO BUY ANY OF THE CAST A PINT DOWN THE FULLHAM ROAD OR ELEPHANT AND CASTLE. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/23/21 Full Review Audience Member Get over the fact this this is a reboot and not the old Sweeney then it's a decent watch. It's a good, very gritty action cop movie, but it is let down by the poor dialogue, but nethertheless it is enjoyable. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Good film, great action scenes. Not the greatest plot, but definitely a fun watch.
